    about 3/4 then it will start to rotate on the output shaft on the trans, it should slip free at that point.

    I just took mine out the other day, just get under the truck with a hammer and beat on it, it will start to slide out. There is a dowel pin about 3/4 the way up that likes to stick in the trans.

    well its out, it was just glued down with years of spilled soda and **** from the previous owner. The back of the console is at about the right spot for the transfer case, I don't exactly see any place i can fit a wrench, hope its under the carpet

    The AWD setup cannot be disabled, its a completely mechanical system. As far as I know the only wires going to the transfer case are for the vehicle speed sensor.

    A day to late, Just finished replacing the everything. Didn't even bother taking the old one out, I figure it will do that on its own anyhow.

    I have had my 97 explorer with the 5.0 for about two weeks, best I have seen it display on the screen is 21mpg while cruising at 60mph. To me out of an older v8 pushing a brick wall down the road that isn't all that bad. Average it shows about 14mpg. I'm not to sure how accurate that is though...
