Fixed 4wd selector motor redneck style

Yeah the body is falling apart, but the frame is in very good shape. Before i drilled I took a wire wheel to the frame to see how much of it was rust. It just had surface rust. No flaking what so ever. My use of it is light duty. 4wd to get out of my snow drifted driveway. The bigger tires...

Fixed 4wd selector motor redneck style

Ignore the wrench still wedged in there. I welded a steel bar onto the end of the motor shaft. Welded a beefy spring onto the end of the now extended motor shaft to make a twenty or so degree bend, another steel bar through the frame and a handle to turn the whole works. All the way one way...

    Redneck 4wd repair/downgrade

4wd is giving me fits. Winter is coming and I've exhausted ideas short of replacing the selector motor and computer which i don't want to spend money on. So I have a plan B. I want to remove the selector motor, weld a steel bar to the end of the selector "knob" on the transfer case, to which I...

Winter is coming. Need more heat. Ideas?

Much thanks. I will try too control air flow to the rad and skip the backseat fire hazard. now all i need is cold weather to test it out. Second thought.. I can wait.

Winter is coming. Need more heat. Ideas?

I'm in the middle of Canada. Several times in a winter it can get to -40F. On nights close to these temps, the heater in my explorer and my corolla can't make enough heat fast enough to counteract the fridged wind beating against my windows. So your breath and all other moisture in the car...

    a/c has me stumped

never mind. I got it. There was almost no refrigerant in the system. It cycles on and off just fine now that the right pressure is in the system and the air cools nicely. This was the first time i used a refill kit with a pressure gauge on it so i didn't know the low pressure side should have...

    a/c has me stumped

I push the a/c switch and only hot air blows from the vents. The compressor doesn't engage. When I short the pressure switch connector the compressor kicks into action but still no cold air. With my pressure gauge on the low pressure side with the compressor running it shows a vacuum and with...

    your small diesel conversion thoughts?

Had noisy alt bearings. Removed intake duct to repair alt and found about a tablespoon of oil in the duct. It seems i have lots of blow-by now. I got to thinking about what to do and am wondering about replacing the engine with say a 4 cylinder vw engine or something. Ideally i'd get an older...

    92 xlt transmission leaking

After i bought my '92 xlt last year i gave it a good going over. Tranny fluid was all over the bottom the transmission. The top of it was clean as far as i could tell so I replaced the pan gasket and that fixed 85% of the leak. It looks like it is still leaking out of where the shifter linkage...

What am I looking at here?

Just wanted to reply for anyone googling this because they have the same symptoms. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and my explorer runs like new. I had to disconnect the radiator hose from the thermostat housing to get at the bolts and it still was a pain, but all is well now. I love this...

    Transmission problems.

I'll go with wishful thinking first... could it be the shifter cables? Does it feel like it goes in and out of gear?

    speedo problem

Mine does it too. The first time i noticed it I looked down at the speedo on the freeway and it was pegged. I got to the store, ran in quick and jumped back in it, it was back to normal for the trip home.

What am I looking at here?

thanks to the both of you, especially for the tip to check the o-ring. An FPR for my explorer is hard to come by where I'm from and therefore expensive so an o-ring would be nice.

What am I looking at here?

My '91 explorer xlt has been running really rough at idle and is very down on power and has developed terrible mileage. then yesterday i started smelling gas like it was running way rich. A 30 second look under the hood and I see clear liquid where none should be. Its gas. It appears to be...

    serious problem after 4x4 stupidity

here 's the sequence of events. locked manual hubs, put in 4x4, drive to town and back on dry pavement with the occasional clunking. next day- reverse out of garage still in 4x4 when i notice the binding i mentioned but this time, once i reached clear pavement I hit the 4x4 button to put it int...

    serious problem after 4x4 stupidity

well snow was and still is packed in the two front rims.. the garage is not heated and it was -40F this morning. It has manual hubs it is still in 4wd (i used it to get thru the drifts in the driveway) but it will shift back to 2wd which i put it in today suspecting the 4wd on dry pavment...

    serious problem after 4x4 stupidity

So I've never owned a 4wd vehicle before. We just got our first big snow and I couldn't wait to try out 4wd (i bought the '92 explorer in summer for $400). The drive way was drifted shut but I drove right out without breaking traction (I now love 4wd). Once I got to the main highway the roads...
