    whistling noise

I ended up removing the trim that the window sits in when closed (with the window down you can grab the corner at the top (toward back of vehicle) and pull down and move it out of the way easily. This exposes the screws that hold the vertical black plastic cover that goes over the door frame...

3rd gen Explorer Blend Door Actuator Replacement

There are full instructions further back in this forum. I dont know 100% if the 2002 model was a last gen design for Blend door or not. If you want videos, i suggest you go to heatertreater.net, they provide a fix to the blend door itself as ultimatly - the breaking of the actuator motor...

3rd gen Explorer Blend Door Actuator Replacement

Blend door & Actuator replaced, Excellent cold mediocre cold Hi Folks, Last winter i encountered the dredded click of death. I broke down and bought the Heathertreater blend door fix and found that only the actuator was broken - likely the blend door jamming caused the actuator to break...

Brakes grinding sound/feeling when warmed up, nothing when cold

Interestingly, i've now put on at least 4000 miles on these new(ish) brakes and pads and the problem hasnt gone away though the grinding feeling happens much less often. The high pitch squeal comes and goes though most problematic during stop and go driving. Im on vacation in California and...

    SOHC ,oil leak on crossmember?

If you've ever changed the oil yourself on one of these engines you'll know that that darn oil filter has no clean path to the pan below and tends to gush everywhere when you remove it. Including over the crossmember / ?swaybar? A few oilchanges without wiping it down and it will look like...

    whistling noise

Sorry, i don't have a sunroof or any kind of plastic door trim other than what comes stock (i.e. none of that sun visor stuff people put on). No water leaking in either so i'm happy to live with the once in a blue moon noise although its always fun to fix something too :P

    SOHC ,oil leak on crossmember?

Old post, but perhaps something i can add for those noticing this now. I have an '03 XLT 4.0 and since purchase 2 years ago, i've had a slow drip of oil eminating from the block gasket directly adjacent to the crank seal on the front of the engine. One day i cleaned the underside of the...

    whistling noise

I get it when there is a bad crosswind. So 90% of the time i hear nothing. I first thought it was the plastic trim on passenger window frame, then i thought it was the surround on the windshield, now i'm completely clueless. Sounds like plastic vibrating REALLY fast. Almost like blowing on a...

    Help! Please answer dumb question

Yep dead center black pan, Bolt hangs 45 degrees down and to the left if i recall. Really the only possible bolt you could loosen for this type of activity, the Tranny is sealed. Anybody find these things are HORRIBLE to change the oil on? Simple to replace the filter and drain but they...

Brakes feel mushy after new pads and rotors were installed.

Bleeding the brake lines on an 01-05 is REALLY quite simple. The key is to get new fluid and some clear tubing for the job that fits nicely over the bleeder screw on each caliper. Using a creeper and if you have a friend to work the pedal you can do it without removing the tires (though its much...

Brakes grinding sound/feeling when warmed up, nothing when cold

Sadly, i bought these off ebay so i don't know the brand / performance. The seller is Ace Performance Rotors but the originator is unknown. The seller said if i take them into a brake shop and get a note saying the pads are bad, theyll replace them at my shipping cost. For the cost of the...

Brakes grinding sound/feeling when warmed up, nothing when cold

Well folks, its time to wallow in defeat. It cant be solved and doesnt seem to have any adverse problems other than a weird feeling and sound. Braking is not compromized and no components are failing / grinding down. Today i took it all apart again, removed the CRC goop from the backs of the...

Brakes grinding sound/feeling when warmed up, nothing when cold

Contacted the manufacturer (Ace Rotors), they says the rotors can be installed in either direction. Problem still persists. Perhaps is the caliper slides, even though the calipers are new and i thought i greased them. Maybe im missing something. Will liberally grease them one of these nights...

    HOW-TO: 2006 V8 4WD Rear Rotor/Pad Change

Excellent post, i like the pictures. I did my back brakes today with similar cross drilled rotors. They made a pretty cool whistling noise while the pads bed in on the back. I'm interested in reading your guide on the front brakes to see if i made a mistake (my brakes make a grinding noise at...

Brakes grinding sound/feeling when warmed up, nothing when cold

Just had a thought... I have cross drilled rotors, could they be installed backwards? The drilled holes are in a wave and the hole closest to the outside of the rotor contacts the pads LAST in forward operation. Is this the right or wrong way?

Brakes grinding sound/feeling when warmed up, nothing when cold

Well folks, after my long post about changing front brakes and the in's and out's of changing your front brakes - I continue to be plagued with a (seemingly) unsolvable problem. The issue: When driving for a period of time and braking normally (approx 6-10 stoplights in daily driver type...

    04 explorer brakes smoking

Check if rotors are noticably different in temp from one side to other. Check for bluish tinge to rotor. If its 1 sided, its the caliper sticking / failed. Unlikely both calipers would fail simultaneously. Read my uber-post on brake troubles (just posted it) If both wheels are hot /...

Explorer Disc Brake Tips and Tricks (LONG)

Well folks i've fought through a number of braking woes recently, which all stemmed from a pending brake pad/rotor job... Seems my brakes were quite low (pads to the steel, rotors getting gouged), a quick browse of ebay and i found a good affordable set of pads and rotors. A few days later...
