    Helping Hand

frost. Yes. That is with doing all of the work myself. Although $580 of that was getting the head cleaned, gasket matched and bowl blended. I also started with an older 4.6 out of a 97 Merc Cougar. Cast iron block instead of aluminium, different intake manifold, different witing, different...

    Helping Hand

Thanks a bunch. I should have posted earlier just got busy with chores this weekend. I found one that worked off of Craigslist. The truck is now done and running properly! I can't thank you guys enough for the help. It means a lot.

    Helping Hand

Minus the oops's I am in it for right around $3,000. Mind you this is with access to parts at a Auto Shop discount. Literally everything is different. If you look at my other thread, I explain alot of what I ran in to while doing the swap.

Thanks Joe, but I need 2wd.

    4.0 Crapped out, 4.6 Transplant!

Some New Pictures Exhaust sound at idle. This is the custom electric fan controller that was made for the Explorer. It doesnt show in the picture, but it has a bluetooth module that will stream the info to my phone through a custom app. The guys who made it are working on a Module to...

    4.0 Crapped out, 4.6 Transplant!

So the EX is all back together, minus AC (late enough in the year that I can worry about it later). I took it out and drove it after the exhaust was finished, fuel lines tucked, and everything else all buttoned up. Unfortunately I am having a bit of an issue with the PCM. The PCM I have is...

    Engine Replacement/Rebuild Questions

Do not attempt to put anything other than what came in the truck back in it. I repeat DO NOT PUT ANYTHING DIFFERENT IN THE TRUCK. I tried this. It turns out to be a nightmare. There are too many systems that are all intertwined that will make you want to just set it on fire. Not worth the...

    Helping Hand

I am in need of a very quick huge hand guys. I have successfully swapped a ported and polished 4.6 in to my 4.0 EX. Everything works as it should ( I'll update the other thread shortly) except that I did not take in to consideration the IVD system... I need some one with a 2003 or higher...

Horsepower Gains 2003 Ford Explorer 4.6L

You could also do cams with the tune, CAI, and exhaust.

can you swap a 4.0 engine to a 4.6 engine

Also with the 4.6 being 97, you will have to tear it apart an put in a new ring gear and get new sensors, because the new ECU that you will have to buy will not read the old sensors. The list of things that do not work are ridiculous. You are going to spend at least $2,000. Save the money, time...

    Engine swap

As every one has said earlier in the thread, the swap is extremely expensive and time consuming. You would need an engine from another Explorer (same generation to cut out 80% of the electronic troubleshooting), new engine harness, new transmission, new PCM, etc.... You are looking easily at...

    Engine swap

Do not go that old! I repeat do not go that old! you will have to replace a lot of the sensors the crank gears, fuel rail, injectors, trigger wheel, different motor mounts, Also the explorer uses the aluminum PI heads, the older Vic will not. The Explorer 4.6 is also an aluminium block, where...

    4.0 Crapped out, 4.6 Transplant!

Alright guys. I know it has been quite a while since I last posted, but today is a day of good news. I believe my transplant has been successful! Far too long to complete due to time restrictions, but it is a success. I fired the engine in the truck using its own power on Saturday afternoon...

    Engine swap

I am going to have to agree with Street, I decided to embark on this project myself. It is far too time consuming, not to mention parts are not easy to find. The entire drive train has to be changed. Engine, transmission, wiring harness, ECM, drive shaft (depending on availability of 2wd vs 4x4...

parting out 3rd gen 2002-2005 explorer

That would be great. It is the only piece I need to finish my engine swap. Ford decided that the part is now obsolete and its not available from them. What year would it come off of? I will need it off of either on 04 or 05. Any older and it will have the wrong connector for the ecu.

parting out 3rd gen 2002-2005 explorer

I know it is a long shot (since it either gets thrown away or cut), but I am looking for the top engine harness for a 2004-2005 4.6.

    engine swap

Unless you are going to put a motor in it that is stock you are going to run in to a lot of problems. You would have to run 2 computers, one for the engine and transmission, and one for all of the internals. not to mention BUying a new transmissions all of the wiring, transfer case (if you...

    2002 eng. Swap

If you want to go with the 4.0 I would recommend going and buying a complete rig. I am doing the opposite and going from 4.0 to 4.6. Everything is different. You will need to get the engine, transmissions are different, computers are different, new wiring harness for the engine. Depending on...

    engine swappable to my explorer

I would definitely stick with a 4.0 SOHC like you have. Stay away from a V-8 swap. If you want a V8, sell the truck for what you can and buy one. More trouble than it is worth to do the swap.

    02 Explorer Lift

How big of tires? My truck runs on 265/75R16's stock. There is also not any company that makes a kit for the 3rd gen Explorer. One would have to be custom made.

Just be sure to check and see if you have a Romeo or Windsor block. The bolt patterns are different.

They are an exact fit. You have a 4.6 after 2001 they already have the PI heads and cams.

    4.0L to 5.4L 4v Navigator swap.

I am in the middle of a similar project. I am going from a 4.0 SOHC, to a 4.6 SOHC. absolutely everything is different! PCM's, connectors to the PCM ( Ford used 3 different kinds), transmissions as you are aware, depending on fuel injectors the connectors, and the position of the exhaust and...

    4.0 Crapped out, 4.6 Transplant!

It has been a pain to say the least. I now know why no one else has done this swap. It has been a battle so far. All of the pieces that I have had to collect has been ridiculous. Everything is different. Not to mention that people destroy wiring harnesses because it is easier when pulling...
