Installed the 8 new Accel coils and the truck runs buttery smooth now! They were $173 shipped from Summit Racing and installed it about 15 minutes. I'm more than a little let down at the Lincoln dealer for pushing us out the door so quickly and insisting that the coils were fine. The...

Misfiring issue is back! I've got 5 original coils at 81,000 miles, and 3 have been replaced under the TSB. So I ordered a set of 8 new Accel coils to see what happens. Stay tuned. P.S. Still can't read the computer from the OBD2 port.

Update on our 2004 Aviator. It just turned over 80K miles and started to misfire again. I pulled fuel injector harnesses one at a time to isolate the bank and figured out it was #3 . Went to the Lincoln dealer to inquire about the TSB which covered coils for 10 years or 100K miles and...

We've got 75K miles on our 2004 Aviator. Only recent issues were two dead bulbs in the left rear corner lamp and also the airbag light comes on now. Does anyone else have an airbag light on? I looked at the wiring under the driver side seat (was told that control modules were located there)...

Yeah, non-fouler spark plug adapters do the trick. The weather is way to cold to mess with it here so I'll put some spacers in during the warmer months. The trick is finding the right spacing because if it's too far out (or removed and tied up under the car) it will get another check engine...

I would just remove the cats and enjoy some extra performance. If you need them in place for emissions testing, then I would definitely have a shop chop out your stock cats and weld in some universal cats. They may even be able to salvage your y-pipe. Or, it could just be your downstream...

I've heard of the crankshaft barely clipping the dipstick in some fords and causing a tick. But aside from getting lucky on a freak occurance like that, then I would suspect something in the timing assembly - possibly a worn tensioner making noise. Although it really could be anything - and I...

No engine tick here. I did have to replace all 4 idlers at 50K miles because they were making a noise like a bad power steering pump. Too bad I replaced them after first replacing the power steering pump :( I hope it's not an overheating related issue since one of the rear cylinders gets...

    Opinions needed, '94-'95 Mustang...

Kinda late to the party on this one, but if you want a Fox, don't buy an SN95. That aside, the market has already rebounded on the Fox, but is rediculously cheap on the SN95 since people still don't care about that car. The kind of fox you would probably want (triple black 93 GT?) with...

I've had the rear driver side window go down, and not up. I slammed the door, and then it started working. When the motors go bad, they can get sticky. Usually tapping on the motor itself with a small hammer (or screwdriver or whatever) frees it up. IN this case, just slamming the door...

On the wifes 2004 Aviator, we noticed when you start the SUV and reverse down our driveway, you get a cabin full of exhaust fumes. I discovered that the rear liftgate seal doesn't make full contact at the bottom of the liftgate. Due to the strange contour of the liftgate, it just flat out...

COP = Coil on Plug. We have 8 coils sitting atop each plug and no more plug wires. The DOHC 4.6 has roots back to 1992 or 1993 when it debuted in the Lincoln Mark 8 (with a different upper intake configuration) and stayed pretty much this way through 1998 when it was in the Cobra. IN all of...

I don't think the aftermarket makes a better coil - despite the claims. Ford coils have generally been so-so, but the Aviator definitely seems to have the worst of the bunch and I don't know why. It might just be a function of the extra load this vehicle sees. I know there are about 3...

It's a coil. Ours had one bad coil (#2) as confirmed by a dealer stress test. We told the dealer that on 3 occasions - all while merging with traffic on the interstate - the vehicle completely died and was coasting. Wife had to turn the key and refire while rolling at 50+ mph. The dealer...

We have a broken pass side visor and I never bothered messing with it. I did once have the driver rear window stop working, so I slammed the door and that got the motor freed up. It's obviously a motor problem and quite frankly, most of these modern motor/regulator cable type systems are crap...

Ours was so intermittent that I would have probably needed a week to drive around and make sure we got the right coil. If the bad one is the last one you test - that's a 2 month ordeal :) But that is worst case. FWIW, pulling the plugs and trying to identify the "more fouled" looking plug...

Read in this thread about the TSB. They basically extend the warranty to 10 years, 100K miles. If you are out of warranty due to mileage, I would play dumb and go to the dealer armed with the TSB # and ask if they can look at it. If they say they won't honor the warranty since you are past...

I haven't done it yet. I like what Even Flow is stating though, so I would probably buy their kit. A friend of mine did this mod to his Lincoln Mark 8 32v DOHC that was swapped into a MN12 Cougar. It was only the longblock and his hood was off, and things looked pretty tight (obviously since...

There are kits that tap into freeze plugs in the back of the heads and allow you to install a cross tube. Currently coolant doesn't flow well back there, gets trapped, heats up, and causes excessive wear on the rearmost cylinders (4 and 8). If you aren't beating the hell out of the motor, it...

I think a lot of problems are caused by people with a lead foot too. We already know the rear cylinder heads have inadequate cooling. NO sense in beating the thing within an inch of it's life until you can do the cooling mod.

Our 2004 is still doing fairly well. It just turned 60K miles. We added a Magnaflow cat back, K&N drop in and a set of stop-tech cross drilled rotors and pads. The motor definitely picked up some power with the filter/exhaust - probably up to the normal 320HP it would have in the Cobra...

I'm only a year late. The wheels are 20X9 I believe in the 05+ Mustang bolt pattern. 05+ are a slightly different offset than earlier Stangs, but the 5X4.5 bolt pattern remains the same. Looks like these wheels might be discontinued too :( But I got em at Jegs for like $900 shipped new. I...

Just an update, our Aviator is not only stumbling again, but now the engine is dying out while driving, and refiring. All with no check engine light. I'm pretty sure this is an ignition problem because when it dies, it coughs out a cloud of black smoke which is an indication of unburnt fuel...

I'm guessing you have the SOHC 4.6L with the plugs placed low by the exhaust manifold primaries. This DOHC 4.6 has a cover in the middle of the valve covers. You pop it off and drop a socket/extension combo down each hole to reach the plug, but you never hit anything around the motor like the...

As an update, I pulled all the plugs and compared them to try and find the one that was misfiring. The driver, rear most bank (#8?) looked like it had a little more carbon build up on the porcelain. But otherwise the plugs looked good for 42K miles and the valleys and coils, etc... were as...

The Aviator does have the Mustang 5 X 4.5 bolt pattern. We recently picked up some 20 inch Shelby Razor's for the wife's aviator. I found this thread because I noticed you had a stumble/hesitation when your Aviator warms up? Our 2004 has been doing this too recently and it just turned...

    04 Aviator with 20 X 9's.....

    04 Aviator with 20 X 9's.....

    Ok, then you measured for the lip. The wheel spec shows 20 X 8.5 with +14mm offset and 5-1/4 b.s. They got that b.s. measurement by taking 8.5 width + 1 inch (for front/rear lip) / 2 = 4.75 inch centerline. 1 inch is roughly 25 mm, so 14 mm = .56 additional backspace. 4.75 + .56 = 5.31, or...

    04 Aviator with 20 X 9's.....

Did you account for the lip of the wheel? The true centerline of a 8.5 inch rim is not 4.25 inches, but 4.75 because rim width never accounts for the 1/2 inch rear lip and 1/2 inch front lip, but backspace and frontspace measurements do. Thanks again, because the pictures of your truck with...

    04 Aviator with 20 X 9's.....

Those pictures would be very helpful. I'm a little shocked that you have just 5.25 inches of backspace, because that would give you 4.25 inches of front space. This 20 X 9 inch wheel in question is sitting at 6 inches of backspace and 4 of fronspace, so it should tuck in a little better...

    04 Aviator with 20 X 9's.....

Awesome. Yeah if you can provide either the offset or the backspace, that'll be all the info I need. I just measured the stock wheels and checked some clearances. Looks like it can handle a little more than 6 inches of backspace before hitting the spindle. I like the stance of your ride so...

Howdy. Just found this site and have been looking at a bunch of great rides. I'm interested in stuffing a 20 X 9 with +24 offset on all four corners and not quite sure if it'll fit or not. Figured before I go pulling wheels and taking measurements that someone may be running this combo (or...
