How much is too much tightening? Tranny coolant line

When I installed the new radiator on mine, the instructions had some ridiculously low torque rating for the fittings that screwed into the radiator. Both of them leaked. I don't know how tight I ended up getting them but I remember putting everything I had into cranking that wrench before the...

    Ball Joint Labor Price

Figure $60 - $90 an hour for labor. I'd say 1 - 2 hours. Add in the cost of an alignment. About $150 - $300 depending on where you take it.

    230k miles - what should I replace?

If it's not throwing any codes or having any problems, I wouldn't mess with it. Stick with routine maintenance and save your money for when it actually has a problem.

5x7's that sound good from aftermarket hu power?

Just installed these speakers a couple of days ago. Going from the stock deck and speakers to a pioneer deck and speakers made a world of difference. I was concerned about what I'd be getting at this price point but the sensitivity and freq response stats all are as good or better than some...

    Broken torsion bolt...please help

Just finished putting mine back in. The block that the bolt threads into does just lay in there. Once the tension from the bar is off of it, you should be able to pull it out. There are two ways to remove the torsion bar. I just finished with my front suspension literally 30 min ago and I tried...

    Vibration after tire rotation

Definitely not air in the power steering. I've experienced that before. Also, I don't notice the vibration when turning the wheel as much as when driving straight. The tires were balanced when rotated. I have a lifetime balance, rotation, and alignment on the truck. I'll have them rebalanced and...

    Vibration after tire rotation

1996 4.0 OHV automatic 2wd. 150k miles. Recently had my tires rotated and now I have a very noticeable vibration coming from the front end. My steering wheel "oscillates" back and forth when driving straight. Seems to be more noticeable when I am coasting than when on the gas. Since the previous...

    Help With New Explorer

I'd check the front suspension components while you're in there doing the shocks. Almost every high mileage 2nd gen explorer I've come across has needed new upper and lower ball joints.

2002 Explorer - Manual to Auto Trans - Engine Swap Question

Don't do it. The 02-04 explorers have major problems with automatic transmissions. Assuming her truck is in good shape, other than the transmission, it's not worth the time and money to swap your engine into that other truck. You'd be better off rebuilding the transmission in her truck...

no heat while idling and mysterious coolant leak

The are a lot of places it could be leaking from. I'd get a cooling system pressure tester. You should be able to rent one from one of the major auto parts chains. Pump it up and look for the leak. I'm guessing either heater core or the valve that controls flow of coolant to the heater core.

    Coolant Leak 95 Explorer

Looks like a head gasket gasket leak to me.

Static electricity shock and the no sound from all speakers

I removed the high level harness from the amp and installed an RCA converter. Everything is working properly now but I'd prefer to just use the high level inputs on the amp. I installed the high level harness by tapping into the positive and negative wires for the rear speakers. I might try it...

Static electricity shock and the no sound from all speakers

Just installed an amp and sub using high level inputs since I have a factory stereo. The explorer is a 96 with a stock cd/cassette from a 2000. I have bypassed the factory amp. I tapped into the speaker signals for the new amp in the back by splicing into the factory amp bypass harness. The amp...

    Mounting ring

Here's a pic of the box installed but before the hole was cut. There is a trim ring that goes back around the opening. On the back of the trim ring, I plan to attach black speaker mesh/fabric so it will just be a black covering and you won't see inside the opening. Because the face of...

    Mounting ring

I originally had the useless pocket in the back. I'm going to stretch black speaker fabric over the trim ring and reinstall it. Haven't gotten the speaker yet but the specs show that it has almost 1/2" top mount height. The front of the box is so close to the panel that this will cause it to...

    Mounting ring

Almost finished making my new speaker box. It will house an 8" sub. Had just enough MDF to build the box. Now I need to make a ring to recess the sub into the box. Can I get away with using something other than MDF for the ring? I don't want to have to buy another 2'x4' sheet just to get a...

    Fiberglass resin over wood?

We'll see how he cheapo sub does. Sometime in the future, I may looking into spending some money on a decent one. I don't spend a lot of time in the explorer since I have drive my work van most of the time. This was really just a project to fill some time and see if I could do it. That's why I'm...

    Fiberglass resin over wood?

Went to the garage and found my fiberglass resin had thickened over the last few years to the point it was almost solid. Guess this stuff has a shelf life. Broke down and bought some MDF and started over. Much happier with the results. Haven't decided if I'm going to add fabric...

    Fiberglass resin over wood?

I had considered getting a factory box fitted with an 8" sub but this is being done for as little money as possible. Right now, I'm at $12. The whole project is being done with material that I have laying around in the garage, which is why I ended up using particle board instead of MDF. The $12...

    Fiberglass resin over wood?

I had considered making the whole back out of fiberglass and using a wood front but it's way more work than I want to put into it. Plus, I've already got the box made and don't want to start over. I'll coat the inside of the box with one or two layers of fiberglass. Since I'm just adding...

    Fiberglass resin over wood?

I'm building a small box to fit In the factory sub location. It's being done as cheaply as possible using materials that I already have on hand. I'm using particle board for the box and I know this is not a good choice but, it's what I have. I also have fiberglass resin and mat laying around...

    Removing old oil pan gasket

I'm replacing the timing cover and oil pan gaskets on my 1996 4.0 OHV. I've got the oil pan off and am trying to remove all the leftovers from the old gasket. I'm having a hell of a time getting the rubber out of the little crevices at the back of the motor. I've been at it for a few hours but I...

Timing cover gasket kit - crank sleeve or not?

Going to be replacing the timing cover gasket on my 1996 4.0 OHV with almost 150k miles. There are two kits available, one with a crank shaft sleeve and one without. I understand the kit with the sleeve is for cases where the original crank seal has worn a groove in the shaft. I'd like to have...

AAL and Warrior shackle install..any pointers?

PB blaster on all the bolts you'll need to remove. Start a couple of days in advance. Spray them a few times each day. Have a mini sledge hammer and drift to knock out any stubborn bolts.
