I'd check the front suspension components while you're in there doing the shocks. Almost every high mileage 2nd gen explorer I've come across has needed new upper and lower ball joints.

Don't do it. The 02-04 explorers have major problems with automatic transmissions. Assuming her truck is in good shape, other than the transmission, it's not worth the time and money to swap your engine into that other truck. You'd be better off rebuilding the transmission in her truck...

The are a lot of places it could be leaking from. I'd get a cooling system pressure tester. You should be able to rent one from one of the major auto parts chains. Pump it up and look for the leak. I'm guessing either heater core or the valve that controls flow of coolant to the heater core.
