    Radio LED display fix!!!

My repair job from 2010 quit working again. The same failure pattern at first, flickering at startup but eventually staying on. But now, it never comes up to full brightness, and it was very very dim at the outer (left/right) edges. Tried resoldering again, with no luck. I found the ebay...

    Factory remote lock/unlock problems.

I mean the main battery. Within a week of my remote locks starting to act up, I began to get weak starts... the battery was having a hard time turning the engine over. For sure, it might have been a coincidence. But it did happen twice.

    Premium display is out

There are several threads. They are all quite old and full of bad advice. And most of the info about replacement parts and repair services is way out of date. Here is the thread I posted in when I fixed mine last month. It is a very easy fix for anyone with basic repair skills, and who knows...

    Factory remote lock/unlock problems.

This has happened to me twice. And both times, it was a warning that my battery was ready to die. Get your battery checked.

    Drivers Seat Recline Handle Help

Did you save your old lever? It might have been covered under a TSB (a free repair, but not a recall). I just posted this to the other thread, I'll post it here too. The original driver's seat lever on my 98 became quite bent, but never broke. There was a TSB on it, TSB 98-25-15 ("Conditions...

How To: Fix Recliner Lever for FREE

The original driver's seat lever on my 98 became quite bent, but never broke. There was a TSB on it, TSB 98-25-15 ("Conditions with the front seat back lever bent.") My dealer fixed it back in 2000, and I posted this to the Explorer usenet group back then: "The lever assembly has been...

How to: Recover your Center Console (10 Steps)

Well, "dudes" can tell you whatever they want. If he really can get $75 for a 10-minute job and $2 of raw materials, then he is a business genius. But the fact is, that you can buy a "kit" on eBay for under $15, which is little more than that same $2 of raw material, cut to the correct shape...

    Radio LED display fix!!!

My display is still working after a week. But I haven't yet put the top on the radio, and I haven't snapped it into the dash. I pulled it out after a short trip (20 minutes or so), and touched the top of the shield. Holy cow, does that thing get HOT! Hot enough to burn you. Truly amazing...

    Radio LED display fix!!!

$39 at my dealer. In any color you want, as long as that color is black. This seems to be the best thread on door handles - I posted over there: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=165081

How to: How To: Drivers Exterior Door Handle Replacement

I fixed my driver's side handle. Both springs were broken exactly like in jkfoote's picture. I used the same #27 spring (Ace hardware) that he did. Cherrybomb's pictures were helpful, but he must have a 4-door. I have a 2-door and it's a lot more awkward. The openings in the inside of the...

How to: Recover your Center Console (10 Steps)

I had mine re-covered a few years ago by an upholsterer. His cover was starting to crack, and this time I tried it myself. He used glue, which (along with age, I'm sure) appears to have compromised the plastic - it's brittle and many of the screw holes were crumbling. I got a new cover on and...

    Radio LED display fix!!!

I should probably keep my mouth shut, but I think my last round of re-soldering worked. I touched up a few surface mount parts on the top side of the board, and I also got the 8-pin IC on the bottom (directly underneath one of those big blue resistors, which are now lifted up from the board a...

    Radio LED display fix!!!

All I really need is the clock. Yes, I can buy a stick-on clock for $2. As it stands currently, my display comes on at start-up. After 30 seconds to a minute, it goes totally out. Then a minute or two later, it comes back on, and stays on. I can live with that if it doesn't get worse...

    Radio LED display fix!!!

I like to try to fix things that are fixable. I work in electronics, although I haven't used a soldering iron in many years. So I give it a try. It's just a matter of finding the right component that is loose. It's easy work if you know how. I like the smell of melting solder, and so far I...

    Radio LED display fix!!!

Well, I tried again. I tried to be much more careful about the 5 surface-mount R's and C's. I also raised the two resistors (on one, I could see the marking "2W" so it's a high-power resistor) that straddle the 8-pin IC on the other side of the board. Two of the attach points for the RF...

    Radio LED display fix!!!

Within a couple days, mine went back to acting exactly as it had before. Either I didn't resolder the right components or I did a lousy job (or both). Since the display flickers for about a minute before coming on, it seems that the heat from the high-power resistors actually helps the broken...

    Radio LED display fix!!!

The display in the original radio in my '98 went out in 2002. (Shortly after I bought the extended warranty which did not cover the electronics.) I whined enough that the dealer fixed it for only $100. Not too long after that, I found the www.shareamemory.com/radio instructions and saved them...
