I just did my 1998 4WD 4.0 SOHC. What I did is before I took the nut off of the back bolt I cut the extra off with a PC tiger saw. That just gave me enough room to get the bolt out. What a PITA.

I had the pump replaced under waranty when the truck had 10k miles because it would not turn on when it was hot. So is failure mode now the pump takes longer to turn on and generate pressure, but once it's running it's OK or is it going to fail on me when I am driving.

Is the car moving when you hear the sound. If it is not, check if your fan belt has stretched and the tensioner is at it’s limit and rattling. Mine only did it when there was a big load on the engine, AC on fan on high.
