DIY: 02-05 Explorer Driver's side OEM grab handle install w/pics

Sorry for not replying promptly. I couldn't get the jack nuts to tighten correctly without the installation tool. I'm sure something could be fabricated at home but for the couple bucks it cost to get the tool I figured it was worth it.

DIY: 02-05 Explorer Driver's side OEM grab handle install w/pics

I should have been more specific when I said there is an angle. When you look closely at one of these handles, one "leg" has a slight angle to it - the legs are not exactly parallel to each other. This angled leg goes from the upper position on the passenger side to the lower position on the...

Yes, there are two square holes already punched from the factory.

DIY: 02-05 Explorer Driver's side OEM grab handle install w/pics

Decided I needed to be grabbing a handle instead of the steering wheel when getting in/out of the truck with all the snow and ice this winter. I found a 04 OEM handle and A-pillar trim piece from Ebay for $24 shipped. My truck is a 02 and everything lined up fine. All said and done this...

    Rattling noise, 2002 XLT V8

probably not timing chain unless theres a ton of mileage. I've had to replaced the serpentine belt pulleys (grooved and smooth idlers) due to noise, but it was more of a squeak than a rattle. Check your heatshields on the catalytic converters.

    2002 Ford Explorer-AC/Heater Problems

    need new brakes and rotors

I just put on brembo replacement rotors from auto parts warehouse .com and akebono ceramic pads all around. They are a little pricey but nice and quiet and no fade at all. Not sure the size but when you search the sites for the truck year/model it'll spit out the right stuff.

Came out great! What did you do for prep?

Whistle sound when A/C is running

I have the exact same noise. I can tell you its not related to the recirc door because its always made the noise whether the door was hung up or working properly (just fixed it last week). I think it is related to the compressor clutching in or out and the subsequent change in refrigerant...

How To: Repair A/C "Fresh Air/Recirc" Door

Mods: This needs to be a sticky! Thank you Eyeinthesky! Because of your effort I was able to find that the actuator arm has been off of the recirc door probably since the truck was new. All I needed to do was remove the metal bracket between the blower/recirc door housing and the center dash...

    Max AC

Probably the blend door sticking. The increase in noise is the blend door being closed off and the fan recirculating the inside air. That is a common problem and theres a lot of info on here.

    Plowing

My local municipality has an earlier (03 or 04) ex that is set up with a plow. The only reason I noticed is because I thought they were nuts, but considering their repair budget is bigger than ours they can keep up with the failures. Next time I see it I'll try to catch the make of the plow...

    Wheels Bearing - What Else?

replace the entire hub. They come complete with ABS sensors and bolts most of the time.

How to: 2002 Explorer rear wheel bearing replacement (pictures)

litzer, go to the forum for the older explorers. You have a "live axle (not independant rear)" where the wheel bearings are in the ends of the axle tubes. I've done it on mustangs and crown vics with nothing special other than a slide hammer with an inside bearing puller.

Rear Upper Ball Joints? Can they be pressed out?

While I can't say that the Moog K500109 won't fit, all my research led to replacing the entire rear upper control arm when I tore the boot replacing the rear strut/spring assemblies. I ended up putting on an energy suspension replacement tie-rod boot. To add to the misery everyone I called...

Recall for 2002?? Any done it already??

After you get the recall done for the wire harness, make sure to zip-tie the thing securely. They left mine hanging and it looked like s**t. Also the cap to the master cylinder was knocked loose. It did only take 15 minutes, tho.

2002 Eddie Bauer Front End Noise

the difference in tire size will make the four-wheel drive think the tires are spinning at different speeds and try to engage the four-wheel drive. even a difference in new tires versus worn tires can cause this. Get two new tires for the rears and rotate frequently. Try the brown wire...

Thought it was rear LSD clutch packs, but Brown wire mod solved it...

From researching the forums and with the description in the TSB06-4-4, I though I have worn clutch packs in the rear differential. I did the brown wire mod the other night and the grabbing/binding sensation in the steering wheel is gone when interupting the signal to the transfer case clutch...

How many miles on your 3RD GEN! orig. tranny????

Replaced the tranny around 65K; had the OD flashing and strange shifting. I believe the cost was around 3500$ back in '06. Now has 99K and runs great. I did get it serviced at 95K at ford and plan to do it every 30K just to be safe.

    Rough ride lately

I have just under 100K on my 02' ex. Rear springs and shocks were toast around 75K. Front lower ball joints were worn by 80K. I just replaced them and noticed a significant improvement in how the steering wheel feels over rough roads. More than likely you'll need to do the rear springs and...

    03 Explorer (Aviator) Spring Replacement

As a former mechanic, I'm sure you know more than i do, but I have recently replaced the springs and struts on all four corners of my 02' 4.6L 4x4. In the rears you need to break loose the upper ball joint and take the entire strut/spring out. In the fronts I had also broke loose the upper...

How to diagnose a wheel bearing..

Just replaced my drivers side wheel bearing the other day because it started throwing grease out of the outer seal. When the passenger side went there was a grumbling/howl noise at speed. If you turn to right and the noise worsens its most likely the drivers side. Not to difficult of a job...

    New member but explorer vet

Hey all, New to the forum but as most folks have I've been sent to this site when searching for ailments. My family has had explorers since 91'. I've got an 02' XLT 4.6L 4x4. So far I've done the typical repairs for the model year: New transmission at 60K miles(dealer) New rear springs...
