    Bad rag joint 92 xlt

The faucet washers did not work out. They shrank and the 5/16" bolts wobbled in the 3/8" holes in the rag joint introducing significant play in the steering. We procured a new rag joint. We stacked steel washers in place of the neoprene washers. The space in between the 5/16" bolt and the...

    Bad rag joint 92 xlt

The solution to a bad rag joint, the 2, reinforced rubber discs in the shaft between the lower end of the steering column and the steering gear box, is the universal Chrysler, GM & Ford kit, available at almost all auto parts stores for $10 to $20. Ford no longer services the shaft. There...

91 Ex 2wd only getting around 14mpg ... lots of new parts help !!

It has been a little over a year and much progress has been made. The timing problem turned out to be the ignition module located in front of the battery on the radiator support. AutoZone's replacement module ($172) provide impressive results. It was like unhitching a heavy trailer. I...

91 Ex 2wd only getting around 14mpg ... lots of new parts help !!

I replaced the engine coolant temperature sensor along with the sensor for the dashboard, $30 for both. Little to no effort to change. There is better resolution for the temp gauge but the engine runs the same, like it is pulling a heavy trailer. I bought the sleeve kit for the power...

91 Ex 2wd only getting around 14mpg ... lots of new parts help !!

Great question! That was looked at early on in the investigation. The rear wheels spin freely. The drums do not get unusually hot. The parking brake works normally; it holds on a slight incline and rolls away when released. The car sails down steep hills.

I think I'm going with the thin bushing. I did reposition the seal a bit to no avail.

91 Ex 2wd only getting around 14mpg ... lots of new parts help !!

Thanks for the input! I should have inspected that more closely when my son changed the front seal. The chain seemed to have a lot of slack for 65,000 miles when we looked at it. To mitigate my regret, the damper has a significant groove where the seal seats and it still leaks even though we...

91 Ex 2wd only getting around 14mpg ... lots of new parts help !!

My 92, 4WD with an A4LD has the same type of symptoms. 12.5 MPG around town and 13.25 on the highway. It has 262,000 miles. Power is pathetic; to travel on the freeway it takes about 3/4 throttle and if you come to a hill it will want to downshift to 2nd at 60 mph. It runs like it's...

    4x4 auto hub rebuild

Ford serviced the hub as an assembly, $400±. No procedures required. Everyone who services your wheel bearings leaves out another important piece. Shims and washers slip over the end of the spindle and must be removed to access the wheel bearing nut. They are many, greasy and slippery...
