1996: run cooling system at no pressure?

I think every time it was fixed in a shop, they also got a new cap. And I bought at least one along the way also. One shop took apart one of the bad radiators to look inside, and it was perfectly clean. There was no stop-leak of any kind used in it, not by me or anyone else.

1996: run cooling system at no pressure?

I don't make the radiators, and they usually do work okay in most vehicles. I've just seen a bunch in this truck all fail in exactly the same way. All from pressure. And I'm not the only one. I think I've put about 6 radiators into this thing in 8 years now. A couple times I did it...

1996: run cooling system at no pressure?

I have a 1996 that has had multiple issues with the cooling system--usually starting with leaks (leaky plastic-tank radiators, for which there is no practical alternative). Lately it occurs to me that these issues could have ALL been avoided if there was no pressure in the cooling system at all...

    Heater / Cooling

The vehicle works, as long as everything else is okay go and do whatever you would. The temperature gauge wandering and the heater thumping doesn't cause any damage themselves. The failure-prone radiators wouldn't be such a problem if the temperature gauge worked properly,,,,, and the...

    Heater / Cooling

These engines have the common double issues of wandering temperature gauges and knocking noises from the heater core. Some of us have been chasing them for a long time, and apparently it is caused by the same thing. There was at least one redesigned water pump that was supposed to solve the...

How To: Replacing Front Hub / Bearing 1995+ Ford Explorer IFS

Okay, I can now say beyond any doubt that it is not really practical to replace the bearings alone. First off: I will call the whole part the "hub assembly". The part that spins is the actual hub, and the part that bolts to the truck's suspension with 3 bolts is the bearing carrier. To...

How To: Replacing Front Hub / Bearing 1995+ Ford Explorer IFS

I spoke with whoever answered the phone at the service department. I did not ask him for identification. He also mentioned that the spindle nut was supposed to not be re-used. I would expect that the dealer's tech info would be the most accurate, at least for an unmodified vehicle. Well...

How To: Replacing Front Hub / Bearing 1995+ Ford Explorer IFS

Just a note: reading along, 250 ft-lbs for the spindle nut seemed high for threads that size, compared to other non-car machinery I've worked with. I called the local dealer up and asked what the torque on the spindle nut was, and they told me that for a 1996 4wd it is 180 ft lbs. The other...

96 explorer: who has an all-metal radiator?

I have a 1996 4.0 liter Explorer that I bought used in 2001. Radiators always leak after just 2-3 years, always where the plastic tanks are crimped on and always during very cold snaps of weather. Radiator shop says many of the Ford radiators have that problem and there's really no way to...
