    2004 Explorer Charging System Failure

My apologies, I should have been more clear. In the service manual under PC/ED section (Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual)-> Pinout Tests-> HY: Generator/Regulator System section it shows HY4 as follows: HY4 CHECK EEC CONTROL CIRCUIT IN PCM ⦁ Key off. ⦁ Remove generator and...

    2004 Explorer Charging System Failure

Thank you again imp. Using the diagram you uploaded I replaced the CAN wires but still no change. Circuit 904 (LG/RD wire) from alternator reads 11.96 Volts when engine is running. The CAN circuit is outputting about 250 mV. I may try replacing the Pink/Black wire that goes to the central...

    2004 Explorer Charging System Failure

Thanks for the reply imp. My manual only covers 2002-2003 (bought it when I had an '02). Is there any way you could scan or photo the wiring diagram of the charging system for me? If not maybe just call out the 2 wire colors under the dash so I can replace them. I should have mentioned that I...

    2004 Explorer Charging System Failure

Hello Everyone, The project truck is a 2004 EB Explorer 4WD. The problem is as follows: Start the truck and the red battery light comes on with the "Check Charging System" message. Occasionally when you start the truck it will charge for about 5 minutes, then back to no charging. Verified...

    2003 Explorer shudder

OK glad to hear you probably know more about mechanics than I do. I had a similar problem with an older Subaru DL, however it turned out that a previous owner had put a used rear diff in it and even though they were the same ratio apparently in those cars they have to be matched or they can...

How many miles will an explorer go for?

My 02 Eddie Bauer 4.0L V6 had 163k miles when someone smashed into the rear end and totaled it. No one in my vehicle was even remotely injured in the accident. I bought the truck with 100k miles and in the 63k I put on it only had to do the brakes and rear wheel bearings one time. Other than...

Keypad Code Printed on PCM not Valid

I was just about to go back out and re-open the door panel anyways, so I will inspect the wires at the door boot thoroughly again. Another thought came to mind though. The PCM was last upgraded in 2006. Is there any possibility that a newer revision might cure this problem as well? I am...

    2003 Explorer shudder

This may sound like a weird question, but are all four tires the same make, model and have the same wear? They should all have the same air pressure as well.

Keypad Code Printed on PCM not Valid

My appointment was actually for today, they pulled the code via their computer and it is the same as the code I read off the side of the module. The tech that handed it back off to me said the keypad was probably faulty. So I swapped the keypad out with my 03 Eddie when I got home (thanks to...

    Rear Wheel Negative Camber

I have owned three of these trucks, an 02, 03 and now I have an 04. All 4x4 with 4.0L V6's. The 03 is the only one that had this problem.

After 6 years of driving explorers....

My first Ex was an 02 Eddie and was the best running vehicle I have ever driven. In the 5 years I owned this truck as a dd the brakes and wheel bearings were the only things that ever needed attention. When someone smashed into the rear end and totaled it at 163k miles I was sad to say the...

Keypad Code Printed on PCM not Valid

Thanks BigRondo. I had a feeling it would need to be reprogrammed. I took my 04 into my local dealer today and they only charge $50 to pull the code from the current module. Well worth it to save the time and trouble so I told them just do it. He initially tried pulling the factory...

Keypad Code Printed on PCM not Valid

OK so a little research revealed that the module is actually called the Vehicle Security Module (VSM), but that doesn't really change anything for my issue. I am now wondering if I can put my 03 module in my 04 since I know the codes for that one. Does anyone know if they are swappable like...

Keypad Code Printed on PCM not Valid

Owing to the fact that my 03 EB was a complete lemon, I just bought an 04 EB to replace it. I had to pull the keyless entry pad code off of the computer module (in the passenger rear door side panel). It is the ONLY 5 digit code on the whole module, so unless there is something I don't know...

    Skipping, grinding noise

My 02 did the same thing, turned out to be the rear wheel bearings. They were so bad you could jack the tire up off the ground and wobble the wheel around. Kinda scary if you think about it.

    differential noise continues....

Have you also verified that some (if not all) of the noise is not coming fom the rear wheel bearings? I understand noisy rear wheel bearings can be mistaken for rearend noise in these SUV's. As for the rearend overhaul, if the assembler shimmed it properly (to specs) then it should not be...

    Rear Wheel Negative Camber

Took it to the tire shop today, they did a free allignment check. Rear wheel camber is out of spec for sure. They are ordering a camber adjustment kit, similar to this one http://www.iapdirect.com/product.php?productid=42082 Installed and 4 wheel alliignment $150.

    Rear Wheel Negative Camber

I bought my'03 Eddie about 1200 miles ago (it now has 105k miles)and noticed it had serious negative camber on the rear wheels (looks like /-\ from the rear) but didn't think much of it at the time, as the rear tires with about 50% wear had worn evenly. However I am now noticing that those...

Kind of scarey to log in and see all of these explorer issues

I hear you, however jchristian79 has a good point. I had an '02 for almost 5 years, put over 100k miles on it and never had a problem one. Last month I bought an '03, and it wasn't until then that I even knew this forum existed. I just blindly assumed all Explorers would be as rock solid as my...

2003 Eddie Bauer Explorer Wont start! battery is fine!

Since you say the battery is fine and your friend was able to start the vehichle with the starter using the jump acroos posts trick, that really boils it down to a few possibilities. 1. Ignition switch is bad or has come partially unplugged (unlikely but I have seen both happen in the past)...

I'm gonna buy 2003 Explorer, Please help!

There really is no vehichle with a 100% hit rate of good ones. This is especially true for 4x4's. If you get a good Explorer they are, in my opinion, the best of the best for the type of conditions in Flagstaff. Jeep Chereokee would be a good alternative from what I understand, but there will be...

grinding noise when wheels to the right

I am going to have to go with wheel bearing, just a guess.

I'm gonna buy 2003 Explorer, Please help!

Explrorers in general are relaible, and very good in the snow. The V8 has a well known issue of blowing spark plugs out of the cylinder head, however, and the V6 has a tendency to go over 250k mile without any problems.

What kind of mileage is your 3rd gen getting?

Further update: It appears that speciffically the D4 codes tend to be getting the best mpg. Anyone have any idea why this would be the case?

02 Exp. Keyless entry; FOB & Keypad broken

Not sure about the keyless entry, but have you tried reprogramming the truck to accept your FOB again? This may not work if the keypad is getting no power, as I have also replaced batteries and never seen the vehichle drops codes for FOB's or keypads.
