    Nope 4.0 has it also, both my rigs have 4.0 Theses hoses are very small look more like wires. Explorers have a gray and black line the gray one goes to a vacuum actuator The other goes to the check Valve then the engine.

    As stated above need to pull the check valve out and test it. You should only be able to blow through on one side of the valve and not be able to suck through the same side. If you can blow through both sides then it's bad. Also look for a broken plastic line. Maybe be broke in the cab or out...

    Glad I could help, hope it all made sense. This happen on are trip from Alaska to Louisiana last week. Knowledge is a good thing. I spend a fair amount of time just reading post. Once again glad it help.

    Vacuum Check valve Another not so common problem is the vacuum check valve failure, You could blow and suck through the valve both ways. This valve is hooked to the black line in the engine compartment side of the firewall behind the coolant tank. This happened on my daughters 2002 xlt 255000...

    Has anyone had this noise with their Explorer?

    Just an idea do you have a limited slip rear end. If so might want to change oil and make sure you get oil with limited additive or add a tube of additive. Noises can transfer from strange places
