When i've done that too much...since BATTERY reads low...it'll start only CLICKING. have checked BATTERY twice now with charger and have tried charging it...no good...

    High Mileage SOHC's Explorers

I hit 320,000 miles on ym stock engine, but there wasn't too much 4x4mountain climbing involved...just tons of long highway miles. Everything else was fine when stock engine went out, so I found another one at 100,000 miles...had my mechanic buddy put it in with a new radiator he had and he...

My share of swear words I swear like there's no tomorrow...ex-ARMY and all, and even with my ex girlfriends...I work on my Truck stuff alone because I just go volcanic! I throw stuff around, the whole nine yards. Lot better than being saint about it and keeping it bottled up. Good luck on...

    High Mileage SOHC's Explorers

300,000 MY 1998 FORD EXPLOR conked out at 300,000 miles; but that was with me really using it a lot on wkd drivings in desert heat and not staying on top of standard maintance, especially in the water-coolant area. So...when it locked up; after countless overheating moments...i was forced to...

How much life can I expect the SOHC V6 too go?

1998 of same MY 1998 of same model you got went out at 300,000.00 miles. I was pushing it pretty hard though, for about 6 months of tons of road driving on wkds., much of it out in desefrt under grueling heat...and probably didn;t stay on top of my coolant. Long story short, head gasket went...

Great advice!! All of it!! Don't know why I forgot about CRAIGSLIST. I kinda also knew the TRANNY might be going on its way out just due to the mileage. much to think of these next few months. Update.... Changed plugs...5 were fine. One was wet. Put in new plugs, new oil and filter -- no previous shaking, no overheating; put in BARS brand gasket head block sealant. Toasted cat I'm positive you're RIGHT on the cat. It had over 300,000 miles on it. If I can seal the popped head gasket with SEALaNT for now and replace the CAT w/universal one, I'm cool w/that for 2 months. Then I'll get it in w/more cash and redo a new head gasket.

1998 ford explorer suv -- catalytic converter?

Thinkwhat i might do first: Chage oil...get the bad out put new oil in change spark plugs put in the "bars" sealant back off a tad bit on tightner on cataly conv. So there's a thin alight gap, so the pressure's released and whatever's been clogging it up hopefully breaks loose...

Funny you mentioned "bars"...the auto parts store clerk mentioned the same...out of all the brands on the shelf, he showed me "bars"...so i might go that route too. Thx again for your advice...much appreciated

thx tHX FOR THE ADVICE...AND I KNOW YOU NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THE MECHANIC. ALL THIS STUFF HIT ME AT ONCE AND WASN'T EXPECTING ANY OF IT WHEN I HAD THIS ENGINE POPPED IN A FEW MONTHS AGO. I'D HAVE PREFERRED TO GO WITH A REBUILT ENGINE TO PUT IN, INSTEAD OF A SWAP, BUT IT WAS MONEY...

1998 ford explorer suv -- catalytic converter?

No...the warranty expired probably a month back or so. 90 day labor; maybe 6 mths parts. It was drop in "used" with only100 000 miles on it. I feel confident w mechanic, so he wasn't ####ing with me. he's trying to build up client base and since I work at a prison nearby...I'm the last he wants...

1998 ford explorer suv -- catalytic converter?

jUST FOUND AN obvious leak at that clamp area what looks like between cconv and rest of exhaust. Besides white smoke...it looks like bubbling foam? I also came back from parts store...the clerk recommended: 1) look at all spark plugs for fouling 2) maybe purchase a spark plug piece that...

1998 ford explorer suv -- catalytic converter?

Not sure how it can be a cracked block or blown head gasket when the oil isn't milky water? And no oil leaks around head gasket. Someone told me about a weird link between bad heater core, catalytic conv. I'll take it to a closer mechanic today, tomorrow. But, definitely got under SUV and saw...

Ive only noticed the white smoke in past day or so...when weather got colder. Also, not having all of these probs at once on short drives -- 50 to 80 miles; but took round trip yesterday over 300 miles t end of trip at night in cold...the white smoke started

After 300,000 miles...my 1998 ford ex suv crapped out. Local mechanic found a same used engine -- 100000 miles -- in a ford truck and popped it in for about 1600.00 w/new radiator. Been fine for 4 months now. It seems now...same compression problems -- lowered compression; takes moments to...
