Hairline crack on top of radiator

My thoughts exactly. Guess I'll be returning the Prestone stuff.

Hairline crack on top of radiator

Regarding the antifreeze, is this stuff okay to use? I've always used the green Peak or Oreilly brand that says compatible with Ford, but I bought two gallons of this Prestone stuff and would prefer to just use it. I see they also make a "Conventional Green" and then an orange one (for Ford/GM)...

Hairline crack on top of radiator

Thanks. The one from my local shop was $170. My factory radiator has lasted me 20 years and ~158,000 miles. Not bad I suppose. For most of the repairs done on the truck, I've used Motorcraft parts. Not a fan of aftermarket, but due to the age/value of the vehicle and the cost of a Motorcraft...

Hairline crack on top of radiator

New radiator arrived from the local shop. It's made in China which I'm not thrilled about, but my research suggests that most are made in China nowadays. 1 year warranty on it. The quality definitely doesn't look as good as the Motorcraft one, but I hope it does the trick. The brand is RadCool...

Hairline crack on top of radiator

Can I reuse my old radiator cap or do I need a new one?

Hairline crack on top of radiator

I have a 4.0L SOHC. Don't have Amazon Prime, but I will check Rock Auto and Amazon. Thanks.

Hairline crack on top of radiator

Well, it looks like the consensus is to replace it, so replace it I will. A local shop quoted me $170 for the radiator (Rad-Cool I think he said?). Oreilly's wants $160 for a Murray radiator and a whopping $286 for a Motorcraft one. I'd prefer to support the small, independent shop, so I'll...

Hairline crack on top of radiator

I definitely don't want it to overheat damage the engine, so I will look into replacing the radiator. Here's a better photo when it's dry. You can clearly see the crack. Thanks.

    Battery Issues

When I went to Oreilly's to pick up the new battery, I had them check the charging system. They said the alternator looked okay (tested while running) and then I shut off the truck and they tested the battery, determining that it was bad. Is there another test I should do? Thanks.

Hairline crack on top of radiator

There is a 1" hairline crack on the top left side of my radiator that I noticed about a month ago. I've never noticed any fluid on the ground, so I think it's evaporating. This is the first time I've seen fluid on the top as shown in the photo. My question is, how bad does this look? Should I...

    Battery Issues

Well, the battery turned out to be bad. Replaced with a Motorcraft one and it fires right up. 👍 Thanks to everyone who replied, much appreciated.

    Will do. Thanks.

    Battery Issues

Thanks. Battery was dead again this morning. Looks like a new battery is going in as a first step, then I'll troubleshoot from there.

    Battery Issues

Thanks. Yes, they are original cables. They look fine apart from that cracked clamp that I have since replaced. They could be corroded under the sheathing, but I didn't have any problems with them before this. Just went out and started her up first try, but sounded like it was struggling a bit...

    Battery Issues

Thanks for the info regarding the grease. I didn't know Vaseline could be used. I should clarify that the corrosion was only on the negative terminal. I did clean that pretty thoroughly. I didn't have any problems with the battery before cleaning it, only after noticing the positive terminal...

    Battery Issues

There was a lot of corrosion on my negative battery terminal, so I cleaned everything and put it back together. In the process of tightening the positive cable clamp, I noticed it was cracked in two areas. I thought this may be a problem since the connection was not good, but it started right up...

'99 4WD Starting Issue and MPG

Pretty sure I replaced the IAC valve a couple years ago. Will have to double check and clean if necessary. Thanks for the tips regarding the fuel economy. I do run the AC and use the Auto function, so will have to cut back on that and see how it goes. Just ordered new spark plug wires, so will...

'99 4WD Starting Issue and MPG

My '99 Explorer EB 4.0 has an intermittent staring problem. It starts up fine, but when coming back down to idle RPM, it sometimes drops significantly and then dies. Doesn't happen all the time. I've been giving it a little gas each time after starting which has solved this problem, but would...

Front Passenger Side Squeal When Turning & Creaking While Driving Straight

Update: It was my lower ball joint on the passenger side. Wasn't bad, just needed to be greased. Somehow the Zerk fitting was damaged and wasn't accepting new grease. I also didn't know that these should be greased at every oil change, which they hadn't been ever since I replaced them around 30k...

Front Passenger Side Squeal When Turning & Creaking While Driving Straight

Good point. I do have some very light whining from the front wheel bearings. There may be more than one issue going on here, but would the front hub bearing assemblies make noise when turning while parked?

Front Passenger Side Squeal When Turning & Creaking While Driving Straight

I have a 99 Explorer that is making a lot of noise from the front passenger side. I've done my homework and it looks like others have reported loose caliper bolts, a loose brake line, or torsion bar trouble. I'm thinking it's the torsion bar, as it does not squeal when turning all the way to...

    Anyone know what this is?

Thanks all. It is loose, and seems to be attached with only one flimsy bracket. I'll have to figure out a way to secure it or remove it completely. As for the other heat shields, I've already used a band clamp on two. The spot welds did come loose.

    Strange Start-Up Noise and Idle

Hmmm, wondering if an oil change every 2000 miles would help? I usually do it at 3k. Also, another weird thing that's been happening is when idling and cold, the RPMs usually sit just a hair above 500. When this happens, there is a noticeable vibration in the floorboard and I can hear the...

    Strange Start-Up Noise and Idle

Crap, that's not good. Was planning on doing a long road trip. It doesn't always sound like this, only once in awhile, so not sure how long I have left. Truck has about 135k on it and was always well taken care of with regular oil changes and maintenance. This is really disappointing. I think...

    Anyone know what this is?

I've been hearing something rattling around underneath the truck, so decided to check it out today and found this. Anyone know what it is and if it's supposed to be holding something, as it has those clips... Truck is a 99 EB Explorer 4.0 SOHC Thanks...
