Solved 2004 4.6l started after 2 years having issues after 20 miles

Well she's alive and running great. Still needs a muffler but the drivability issue is solved. My best guess is that the coolant leaked into the spark plug wells either from the aluminum crossover seal where the manifold was internally broken or from the upper radiator hose. The coolant and...

Solved 2004 4.6l started after 2 years having issues after 20 miles

Alright so spark plugs are changed and intake manifold is out. Probably took 20 minutes per spark plug bore to clean all the junk out of them. Cylinder 4 sparkplug bore was the only really clean one. I got a little O-ring pick tool set and shoved rolled up pieces of shop towel down there and...

Solved 2004 4.6l started after 2 years having issues after 20 miles

Thanks Eddie. What a pain in the butt scooping coolant and sand out of the spark plug wells without a proper air compressor is! Any suggestions for what cleaner to use on the coils?

Solved 2004 4.6l started after 2 years having issues after 20 miles

Alright so new EGR valve didn't improve drivability. I loaded a MAF in the parts cannon too and that didn't help. So next step for me was to take a look at the spark plugs because hey that might be it right. Running out of options at this point. Spark plug wells 1, 6, 7 and 8 so far are...

Solved 2004 4.6l started after 2 years having issues after 20 miles

What did the ranger drive like under limp mode? Was it intermittent or did it stay in limp after it was triggered?

Solved 2004 4.6l started after 2 years having issues after 20 miles

Well due to a lack of a smoke machine and an excess of curiosity and desperation, I wanted to keep tugging on the thread of my EGR valve. Noticed EGR.Err values both +/- 95 and in between during the episodes of the worst drivability. (Example: Egr command: 89% / EGR Err : -78% and EGR command...

Solved 2004 4.6l started after 2 years having issues after 20 miles

So what I've found so far: - Can't be the O2 sensors - the O2 sensors respond to rich and lean induced conditions - Can't be cats - post cat O2 sensors are a stable voltage when warm. - Can't be fuel pump - pressures are stable around 38PSI during operation. (Max: 44 / Min:36 ) - Might be...

04 4.6l What dictates short term fuel trims?

Just wondering what all the PCM uses to calculate the short term fuel trims. I understand in Closed Loop, the oxygen sensors come into play but at a cold idle what all is being used? MAF? FRPT? TPS? I have screaming high short term fuel trims at cold idle (40/60). Unplugging maf sensor has...

Solved 2004 4.6l started after 2 years having issues after 20 miles

Definitely something affecting both banks majorly. Does better at higher rpm (while parked). Kinda seems like vacuum doesn't it? I just noticed that the total trim on bank 1 is 40 while bank 2 is stuck around 25. Definitely more than 1 thing going on unfortunately for me.

Solved 2004 4.6l started after 2 years having issues after 20 miles

Notice here another oddity that the accelerator needs to be at over 10 percent to get the RPM to respond.

Solved 2004 4.6l started after 2 years having issues after 20 miles

Looks like I've definitely got a problem in bank 1. Could be a bad MAF maybe along with an intake manifold leak or something extra in bank 1. To me my 02 sensors look normal. I unplugged a vacuum hose and the engine stalled but the 02 trace responded as it should by going lean.

Solved 2004 4.6l started after 2 years having issues after 20 miles

Alright so after watching a bunch of great videos from SB and Scanner Danner, I got me an OBD Link Ex and ForScan. Here's what I've got

Mystery wire on fuel injection harness

It seems to me like it would fit either on the stud for the fuel rail close by there or the stud on the intake manifold near by. Not much else there that I can see!

Mystery wire on fuel injection harness

I hate to post this question but I found this little connector boot disconnected and I can't figure out where it's supposed to go. Is it a ground? Where am I supposed to put it? 2004 4.6L 2 valve.

Solved 2004 4.6l started after 2 years having issues after 20 miles

Awesome videos thank you very much. I will be doing some studying about diagnostics but won't be able to work on the old girl for a couple of weeks. I will definitely post an update when I have a chance to see what the fuel trims are showing.

Solved 2004 4.6l started after 2 years having issues after 20 miles

I have not checked the fuel trims. I have a pretty basic code reader. I would have to look up what the levels should be and compare. I'm about to try removing the upstream O2 sensor and see if it makes a difference. I would honestly just cut the cats out and route the exhaust directly to a...

Solved 2004 4.6l started after 2 years having issues after 20 miles

Progress report: * replaced EGR valve due to EGR ERR values in forscan. Didn't do anything * replaced MAF mostly just to prove that it's not the MAF. I know, I know typical parts changer. Didn't do anything * went to replace spark plugs, spark plug wells filled with coolant. Next step is intake...

Odd findings during rear diff pinion seal replacement

The pinion seal replacement was a success! No more leaking and the vibration seems somewhat lessened. I have heard that these Fords are known to have some vibration in the rear differential no matter what you do but the droning vibration at cruising speed is definitely less now. Tightening...

Odd findings during rear diff pinion seal replacement

Thanks for your guidance! I did not have the proper adapter to go from 1/4"M to 3/8"F to fit on my 27mm socket. I do now though. I am reusing the forward cone bearing for cost reasons and that the rollers look very good as well as the cone bearing race very smooth and no shavings present in...

Odd findings during rear diff pinion seal replacement

I am going to get a new pinion nut and crush collar/sleeve from Ford today. 7 bucks for the sleeve and 5 bucks for the nut. Going to set the preload up properly when I reinstall the flange. Just trying to call around to find out what my preload value should be. Im thinking around 35 to 40 inch...

Odd findings during rear diff pinion seal replacement

I should add too that I did not remove the rear tires or brake calipers to do my preload torque measurement.

Odd findings during rear diff pinion seal replacement

I've had my explorer for almost a year now. Its got about 180,000 miles / 290,000 km. I've put probably 10,000 or more Km on it now mostly doing highway trips for a long regular work commute. I've always had a distinct and sometimes annoying humming/vibration during acceleration between 50 and...
