    Vibrating right cat... exhaust hanger?

I'm going to get it on the lift at some point for a closer look. It sounds like the heat shield, but it feels solid. Thanks for confirming that there is supposed to be a bracket there!

    Vibrating right cat... exhaust hanger?

I'll double check that. I don't think it had any movement, but who knows.

    Vibrating right cat... exhaust hanger?

I did, the heat shield is nice and tight. It's weird, because it looks like there should be a bracket for the hanger on the crossmember, but there's no sign of anything ever being there.

    Vibrating right cat... exhaust hanger?

I noticed what sounded like a heat shield rattling on the 04 Explorer, and when I checked it out today, I noticed that the sound appeared to be coming from the right (passenger side) catalytic converter. It looked to be vibrating pretty badly when I had someone put it in drive and put the...

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

For sure going to keep up on fluid changes. Fortunately what came out of this transmission looked really good, so I’m planning on keeping it that way. It looks like it was a reman unit, but I don’t have specifics on that. My dad isn’t too hard on his vehicles, so I don’t see him having any...

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

Alright, so I have installed a new-to-me used transmission, and all issues have been resolved. Shifts great, no noises. Finally! Now hopefully this will last a long time and I won't have to worry about it anymore.

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

Yeah, I think you're right. I hate to blame my dad here (also because he's stubborn and won't admit to doing anything wrong in the first place 😬) but he should have pulled the trans back down the first time this happened. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20, right? I felt the front overdrive drum...

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

This just keeps getting better! lol I figured the fluid was low, so I went ahead and added some fluid, took it for a drive. All was well, no error came up. Came back, drained off the excess to level it, and drove it again. Within 1/2 a mile, it flared from first to second, then threw the check...

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

Just wrapped up the installation earlier this afternoon, and while the truck drives fine, I still hear some noises... I want to say I'm surprised, but I'm not lol. Anyway, the wah-wah noise is gone, however I still hear a mild whine. All I can think is that there was a chain reaction that caused...

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

Update... parts have arrived, I plan to start teardown tomorrow (among several other projects, but we'll see what I can get done). Now the bad part... my dad complained of shift flares when it's cold now, but the shifting improved when the truck warmed up. Not what I wanted to hear. I know a 2-3...

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

Awesome, that's all I needed to know. I want this to be the LAST time the transmission comes out of this truck. I'll be sure to inspect everything carefully.

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

Gotcha, I just wanted to make sure that the pump isn’t holding anything together in the trans that will be a pain to put back. It looks very easy to replace, but I don’t want any surprises.

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

I think I'll just order a rebuilt pump that uses the Sonnax valve. I've seen mention of an alignment tool, does anybody know if that's just for assembling the pump, or if it's necessary to install the pump onto the transmission? I haven't been able to find anything showing proper installation of...

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

What pump rebuild pump are you referring to from TransGo? This kit? TransGo | 5R55W, 5R55S, 5R55N High Performance Valve Body Kit I don't see any kit from them that specifically mentions the pump.

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

Huh, that's interesting. Usually it seems people have the issue of the torque converter not seating all the way back. The pump does seem fairly easy to access at least (once the trans is removed), so that's nice to see. It's annoying thinking of all the work, but at the same time this truck has...

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

The spacer plate is there and in good shape. If I remember correctly, the dowel pins are as well.

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

I had to replace the transmission drain plug today, so while I was under there I listened around again with the stethoscope to try and pinpoint this noise. I didn't hear anything on the bell housing, but I heard it most in the transmission pan. I could also hear it pretty clearly on the...

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

Agreed. I'll probably order a new TC soon. I hate to drop the trans for a third time, but it's really not that bad of a job. If that's what it takes...

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

It's absolutely the bell housing area. I'd touch the torque converter itself to be certain, but ya know... it spins 😜

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

Just finished reinstalling the trans after replacing the rear crank seal for the THIRD time. I made sure to check over everything, and I don't see any problems. The torque converter was aligned fine, and nothing seemed to be binding. Now that I have it back together, the noise is exactly the...

Intake Manifold Rattling? 2004 4.0 SOHC

Haha, I had that thought too! That's about what it sounds like. If I put my ear up to the intake manifold, it sounds like a diesel.

Intake Manifold Rattling? 2004 4.0 SOHC

Yeah, I was thinking it could be gasket related, but I don't know. There's a glob of RTV holding together the EGR valve to the intake manifold, so that could be a problem. I'm going to smoke test it today and see what I can find out. The weird thing is that the ticking noise is primarily coming...

Intake Manifold Rattling? 2004 4.0 SOHC

I know what everyone's going to say already, and no, I don't think it's timing chain related. I've been trying to trace this rattle on my dad's '04 Explorer 4.0. After plenty of time poking around with a stethoscope, I believe the noise is coming from the intake manifold. The first place I...

    Riding down the freeway

When I had my Mountaineer, I drove it like I drive anything else. I've always been used to lower cars (I'm a BMW nut, if you couldn't tell from my name) so it was a little weird at first, but the size of the Explorer is very easy to get used to. That's one of the reasons I love these trucks...

Rattle/"wah wah" noise after replacing rear crank seal

I don't remember exactly, my dad had been the one to remove it this time so he may or may not have installed it the same way. I feel like that would be causing additional vibrations, though.
