    Blah..

Hmmm.... this may be a good time to replace that freeze plug with a block heater ;) There are also "rubber" freeze plugs that can be fitted by hand, then tightened with a wrench -- not too tough at all.

It's the Ext cab with the rear suicide doors -- :dunno: yeah, not the foreign market 4-door ... and it's a 4x4 ;) (of course)

    Argh! Diff and gear q's

Wow! rumney510 - we should talk -- I work with a shop in Ft. Collins that'd save $$$'s if you're really going for $450/axle labor in Denver. It's always a good idea to go with a comfortable gear shop that's willing to warranty/guarantee their work.

    Custom roof rack...need imput

probably not my place to say, but ... ... the load-bearing capacity of the welded drip rails will far exceed the capacity of any roof mount you may be considering. As posted, Thule & Yakima both offer respectible mounting platforms, though I suspect that a quick visit to an RV or boat shop...

    Argh! Diff and gear q's

[b]Denver....it's $450 per axle for gears[\b] You could shop some -- (try BigOffRoad.com) SVO 4.10 gears just over $200 (other makes less!) & a few 'special' install deals at $200/axle... (or are you talking gears, bearings, installation? then $450 is a good Denver price)

    '96 8.8" rear end, ebrakes?

Ed - The covers support the carrier bearing caps. The 8.8 is strong enough (and the carriers too!) so that if you apply liberal HP/torque the carrier bearing caps will flex allowing the ring/pinion dimention to change (a bad thing). Mostly used in rapid accelleration (drag) applications. The...

    HiLift Jack alternatives..anything smaller?

Another thought along this whole line is that the jack mechanism, top, and bottom plate are easily moved to different sized rails (like 5 minutes of on/off)... ... So if you go off and secure a "shortie", all you'd have to do is grab a new rail to up-grade -- or just stick the longer rail in...

    HiLift Jack alternatives..anything smaller?

Anime4x4, I have an older 36" (or so) high lift -- been sittin' in the corner of the shop for about 2-years... (Used to be bumber mounted between the headlamps on one of my old Broncos... Interested?

Pinion Depth - evaluation factory setup

Ok, gotta do this sometime, the dreaded 1st post: What type of marking (if any) does Ford put on their pinion gears, for the 8.8” axle, to identify the variance of the pinion from the optimal test depth? I'm often left to measure cheapo after-market or other un-marked pinion variances so...

    A note of thanks

Yep-- Got a '96 with bad pinion bearings (LS 3.73:1) - going after it as soon as I find a few things out (like figurin'-out the factory pinion depth codes)... Expect posts... Queries were inconclusive. Thanks again to all,

    A note of thanks

I'm still reading around the site, so that I can avoid wasting everybody's time and making an a$$ of myself, but the Explorers are looking fun -- Just not sure I can buy em as cheaply as I get my j@@ps (<$1000 per)... I am convinced that I'll be needing a '95 or later 8.8" Ford diff with an...
