    back seat headrest removal ?

Good luck. I have the same seats and have never been able to take them out. I had to get rid of one of them for clearance and my only option was to remove the headrest pad and keep the metal frame in (which will not solve your problem, its a complete loop). If you figure out a way to remove...

How to: 2002 Explorer rear wheel bearing replacement (pictures)

Ok, the owner of the truck before me for some reason decided to just remove the parking brake from the passenger side altogether where i'm working. If i pull the backing plate off the knuckle, do i even need to bother reinstalling it if I dont even have any of the e-brake componants? Where...

    all terain tiret question

I have an '02 XLT and about 2 years ago i put on a set of Hankook Dynapro ATM's, and absolutely LOVE them! Their road manors are fantastic, way better than even my old BFG Rugged Trails which are OEM. Great wear life, i've got about 20,000 miles on them and they still look brand new. Super...

In the market for a 2002 Explorer - need advice

I have an '02 XLT 4x4 with the 4.0 Flex engine. Its currently got about 135k miles on it, original tranny and engine. Have had no electrical issues, no engine or trans issues (but i'm generally very easy on them and in tune to whats going on with both). I would search for an Ex with the towing...

    Help Changing Rear Differential Fluid

Has anyone pulled the rear diff cover off to drain the fluid/clean out and inspect the gears etc. like you would do on a normal Dana 44 etc? I need to change my fluid, but after driving at highway speeds for awhile, i am getting a very distinct grinding feeling while turning as if all the oil...

    Sway bar bushing replacement?

I don't have a picture write up, but i just changed mine a few weeks ago. Its a very simple process, literally just unbolt the old bushing hangers, remove the bushings, and then grease up and install the new ones in place of the old. Nothing super difficult. I replaced mine with a set from...

Strange Humming Noise From Rear....2002 Explorer

Gbranh, did you replace the bearing yourself or have a mechanic do it? If you had it done, what did the job run you? I will be replacing my 4th, yes 4th, right rear bearing on my '02, as well as the left rear and really don't want to tackle the job myself in south florida heat.

    quick strut instal

Josh, there is room to get the 13mm wrench in there to remove the nuts. You would be hard pressed to get a socket in there however, and a ratcheting 13mm wrench will be your best friend! For a little more clearance room, remove some of the inner fender liner and you will have more space. It's...

    Tire Load Rating Question

Hey guys, I'm up for new tires and looking at the Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10's, but there are a few different load ratings that have a pretty drastic difference in price. The two main ones i'm running across are the 108T's and the 119R's. I have an '02 XLT 4.0 with no third row seat. I will...

How To: Replacing Upper Ball Joints on a 3rd Gen 4x4 [Pictures]

Ok, so i FINALLY finished my work on the X and it was a major P.I.T.A (look for a complete write up soon, thank you Michigan rust!). But after 2 test drives i'm less than satisfied. Here's what i did - new QuickStruts on the rear, New Monroe Reflex Struts with original springs up front, new...

    quick strut instal

Thomas, The rear quick struts go in really easy. Installed them last night. My best advice, the 2x4 works wonders with and extra pair of hands to press down the lower control arm to install the strut, and a RATCHETING 13mm wrench will be your best friend! There wasn't enough room for me to...

    How to: Painted Pillar Trim

I would think so, especially the stores that carry duplicolor products. Just check around, I've never used it myself, just seen it used on various auto shows. Let me know what you find and how it goes, I live in S. Florida so my clear has all but completely flaked off.

    How to: Painted Pillar Trim

Looks good! You could always consider spraying a few coats of Duplicolor Edging Clear to bring back the gloss and protect the paint. It comes in a rattle can, so just spray a few coats after the paint is dry. Just a thought! Check it out here: http://www.duplicolor.com/products/pro_specialty.html

How many miles on your 3RD GEN! orig. tranny????

Thats brave! But I'm glad someone else is doing the same thing I am. 120k on my 02 with no maintenance to the tranny. I don't dare touch it for fear of something going horribly wrong afterwards. Right now its still a smooth as the day i bought it (thankfully) and if it ain't broke, don't fix...

How To: Replacing Upper Ball Joints on a 3rd Gen 4x4 [Pictures]

My bad, i was referring to breaking the ball joint loose from the steering knuckle, not the control arm. I beat the crap out of it with no results, so i went out and bought a torch, and a little heat did the trick! As you can see from the picture, it was definitely time for a new ball joint...

    Any other parts needed?

Thomas, I currently have my 02 up on stands replacing suspension on all 4 corners. I ordered quick struts for the rear because my springs are broken, and just ordered replacement Monroe struts for the front. Now that I'm a few days (shoot me-the truck is from Michigan) into the install, i wish...

Varying tire tread depths will damage drive terrain

I say no B.S. I've got an '02 with BFG Rugged Trail's same as OE. When i bought new tires a few years ago, i only bought 3, and reused the original spare tire for the 4th. There was a TSB on the tires when i was at Belle Tire, because BFG slightly redesigned the tire, and the overall...

How To: Replacing Upper Ball Joints on a 3rd Gen 4x4 [Pictures]

Alright guys, I need help! I've been at this for two days now and for the life of me cannot break loose my drivers side upper ball joint from the control arm! I've been beating it with a 3lb mini sledge, a ball joint seperater tool, pry bars, pb blaster, you name it and I can't get the dang...

    03 explorer trailer hitch

I have an '02 Flex V6 with the class III/IV hitch. It should be more than capable to pull a bass boat or camper with no issues! Before you pull though, make sure you check the rear springs. It's an '03 so you shouldn't have the broken spring issues the '02's have but double check before you...

Mustang inspired grille (speed grille with built in lights)

I agree Jarvis! Your grilles look awesome, i'd be nervous too. I've thought about trying it with a stock grille as a practice run before cutting up a grill like yours.

    Brake System Flush Pattern

Hey Guys, Doing a complete brake fluid flush on my '02 this weekend. I know each vehicle has a specific pattern to flush the system (eg- RR, LR, FR, FL). Does anyone know if it is that common sense pattern of RR, LR, FR, FL for our Explorers or is it something different? Thanks for the help!
