Also I had to remove two washer looking things on two of the lugs. They look like they're meant to go on and not come off. Needless two say both of them broke on the way off. I'm guessing it's necessary to replace these. Anyone know if most auto parts stores carry them or not?

That may be it. This problem began when my lights went out about a year ago. The entire switch fell apart under my dash.
