Dump the Explorer or Replace Engine?

I have a 2002 Ford Explorer and if I were in your shoes, I would sell. I would put $4K towards a newer vehicle rather than investing that kind of cash on a soon to be 10 year old car.

    Need to buy new battery...

Costco's Kirkland battery exceeds OEM's specs.

Weird noise when I accelerate? Metallic sound?

Depending on where the sound is coming from, it could be "pinging" or the infamous "time chain" issue.

    Front Quick Strut Install

Great write-up. How do you like them so far? Can you tell the difference between your old ones and these? How long did it take you to install these? Thanks.

    Transmission service in '04 Explorer

Sounds about right. Depending on the mileage, you may want to do major service (30K, 60K, 90K) which may include the tranny flush.

    Spark Plug Threads........

I did the same - put little bit of antiseize on each spark plug.

Miles on your rig with timing chain rattle

Did you replace your primary chain? Noises are intermittent and usually occurs between 2K to 3K RPM. Can we continue to drive for many more miles with this symptom/problem?

Miles on your rig with timing chain rattle

Eqppwqqep, Thanks for your input. I think I will perform the 120K and hope for the best.

Miles on your rig with timing chain rattle

Are you guys planning on keeping your car? Sell it? Fix it?

Miles on your rig with timing chain rattle

Great call out on the different failures. I do not know where the failure is because the dealer was unable to diagnose properly. They thought it was the heat shield that was rattling while the other mechanic thought the timing rattle only is presence on start up. Wasted my money taking it to...

Miles on your rig with timing chain rattle

Like alot of other Ford owners, my 2002 Ford Explorer has a pinging/rattle noise between 2K - 3K RPM. It started to make this sound soon after my purchase at 70K and it now has 120K. My question is how many more miles will it last before the engine seizes? If you have the timing...

    easy squeak fix

Replace your front bushings and the noise will go away. It's a 30 minute job and you don't even have to jack up your rig.

Turtle Wax F21 is the worst product ever‏

All, I wanted to inform you of my experience using Turtle Wax F21 Super Protectant Interior Cleaner on my BMW and Ford Explorer. This stuff will ruin your interior! This stuff leaves a white residue that won’t come off. At first I thought it was because it was still wet and would clear...

Need Part Number for the rear liftgate glass assembly

I believe Ford had a recall on these and so my dealer did it for free several years ago. Not sure what all the rules are for getting it done free.

    03 XLT Tuneup

I did mines (2002 XLT Explorer with 110K miles) and noticed no difference.

Is changing the trans fluid really important?

Here's the 30K, 60K, and 90K service requirements for 2002 Ford Explorer - Change automatic transmission/transaxle fluid on all vehicles equipped with AX4S, 4F50N, 4R100, 4F27E. Inspect automatic transmission fluid level on all other vehicles, if equipped with dipstick. Consult your dealer...

Is changing the trans fluid really important?

I haven't looked at my manual, but I thought it was every 30K? I am very surprised if it is at 100K. When I take my vehicle in for 30K, 60K, 90K mile service, they do a tranny flush, coolant flush, oil change, and air filter.

    Annual Repair Costs

$1400 is insane. Not including gas and insurance, I would say about $200/year.

How much $$ do dealers make?

Great looking truck. Prices are always driven by supply and demand. I would say around $13K is reasonable since last month the sales were slow and they have a huge incentive to get it off their lots.

    Interior lights stay on

Agreed. I had the same problem and I ended up lubing the latch and my door ajar light went away. Try this cheap fix first.

Strange creaking/squeaking noise in frontend..what is it?

You may not even need to replace the bushings, if they are still in good shape. Just grease it up first and see if the noise goes away.

    Roof rack question.

FYI. I have a 2002 Ford Explorer and the black paint is peeling off from the cross bar and the roof rack.

tools for rear differential fluid change

I just did my rear differential and used the 3/8 ratchet for the fill plug. The drain plug size is huge and I didn't have a tool for it. Instead, I siphoned it out and filled it with Royal Purple. So far so good.......give it alot of time to siphon that stuff out.
