OK let me clarify. Look at the photo below it is a replacement from Auto Zone also known as a water outlet. Auto Zone shows it with a paper gasket. BUT you can not get a paper gasket only, they do not offer one. I went to Advance Auto and there water outlet does not even have a gasket. I will be using my old housing no need to replace it.

Now here is my question I am doing a complete cooling overhaul radiator, pump, fan, clutch & houses and trying to have everything ready. I have a new thermostat it has an O-ring type gasket with it.

For those of you that changed there thermostats is the O-ring that comes with the thermostat the only gasket you need. Seems to me there should be a paper gasket on that housing along with the O-ring. If I need a paper gasket seems the only way I’m going to get it is too make my own. This is about the only thing I’m not sure of before I start the job. I’m trying to get everything lined up because it’s going to be real hard to get something after I start tear down.
Thanks
Bruce

if memory serves me correct, there is no gasket, just the o ring that goes around the thermostat.

^ This.

I been digging more and seems the O-ring around the thermostat is the only seal/gasket to use. The thing that threw me is that Auto Zone sells the housing with a paper gasket shown above???? Don't quite get that!!!

Ditto, only an o-ring.
