New here. I have an 01 with a 5.0 200K. Stock. Yesterday it started to stall as it hit the rpm area where it should shift. It just falls on its face no miss but it sounds like it's starved for fuel. Newer plugs, air filter, wires, and coil packs. In the last month only a couple times it takes longer to start than it has in the past. What should ty he fuel pressure be? I replaced fuel filter with no changes. If you push the accelerator in slowly it is fine in park but if you punch it the engine is starved of fuel. Ideas? This motor is strong and bulletproof. Always use synthetic and Lucas

Original fuel pump? All of mine died between around 175-200K, though they usually begin by giving intermittent starting problems when the weather turns cold.

I'd assume so I've had it for over 100K. Changed fuel filter, plugs, and it's still the same. Found a code reader. It had 6 codes. Po171,po401, po171,po442,po455, po171. It still runs the same with it starving itself right at shifting which is 3K rpm. If you are parked it will slowly go up past 3K rpm with no miss but if you punch it it will only go to 3K then starve itself. When changing plugs the middle two on pass side smelled of fuel?

Most of those codes would not effect the way your vehicle runs and are related to one another. The one that might be causing your problem is the P0401. It's saying your exhaust gas re-circulation system (EGR) is not working properly.

Please keep in mind that the ODB II error code only points to an issue. It doesn't specifically point to a particular part, though it could be your EGR valve is not working. More diagnostics are required to isolate the problem.

I'm finding that!! I'm older school mechanic and this is running me frantic. No missing is what is throwing me off. It's just not running when I try to get on it.

After looking at two pages on the egr I think that is my problem. I know the pipe going form the manifold up to it has a leak for sure. It's cracked at the nut on the pipe. I have no emission test. Can it be gone arpund?

I've never read about anyone here removing/bypassing the EGR and I personally wouldn't do that.

BTW, There's another part of the EGR system that also often fails. It called the DPFE sensor. It tends to melt or gets a hole burned through it and then no longer does its job. Even the hoses that connect it can melt. Below is a link to what it looks like. I'm not sure where it's located on the 5.0L, but on the 4.0L it's connected directly to the EGR pipe.

The other ODB II codes you're getting have to do with a vacuum leak somewhere, which could be being caused by many things, one of them being the EGR system.

The DPFE on the 5.0 is on the back of the intake plenum, passenger side. Naturally, the bolts (8mm I think) and the plug go in from the back next to the firewall so there is tight access! There are two hoses, of different diameters, that both carry exhaust gas, so you need the special high temp ones - can't use normal vacuum lines. Dorman sells them as a kit if I recall correctly. Good luck.

I was in a rush to get it going for a big coyote hunt with our coyote dogs and did not get it figured out so it's sitting. I did see the dpfe but it "looks" ok. I'll update when I get back to it but I'm in my 01 4x4 ranger at this point.

You cannot tell anything from the way the DPFE looks. It can be tested, using a vacuum pump (or an improvised source, like connection to the intake vacuum) and a scanner, but that's probably more trouble than it's worth. If your vehicle still has the original aluminum body one, it's most certainly bad now. That much said, the EGR malfunction is unlikely to be the cause of your engine going flat.
As for the rest of your codes, P0171 indicates system too lean on Bank 1 (passenger side) - possibly a fuel delivery problem. As KODA said, check the fuel pump.
P0442 indicates that the evaporative emission control system detected a leak. Unless it's huge, hard to believe that driveability will be affected. P0455 is from the same system, and essentially the same thing. This code is often triggered by a bad (or improperly tightened) gas cap.
