I had this problem with that style made hatch, what I did which was a pita was take the panel off inside and then you will see the linkage for opening, and mess with turning/pulling the rods to get it to open.
yeah, once you take the panel off the inside you'll see a rod going to each side connected by plastic clips, the plastic clips just snap off and on, you may want to move them to adjust the linkage too as sometimes they move and will screw up whether you can open it or not.

That sucks when it happens when you least expect it. But your welcome, sorry I don't remember exactly what I did to mine but at least you have an idea what you'll be looking at.
