Hello,

I hope this post finds everyone well. My truck was diagnosed by a dealer with a timing chain issue.

It was relatively quiet and now is getting louder as I have a long commute. I tried additives at the last two oil changes (STP / Lucas) which did not seem to help.

Is there any way to manually lubricate the chains in the morning before driving? I don't mind taking the time each day but cannot afford to get a new engine or have them replaced at the moment.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated as I really need this truck to work and don't want to let it become a "beater."

Thanks again!

P.S. I think it's the rear timing chain but not 100% certain.

If it rattles consistently at idle and you are sure it's the rear then it's either time to read some writeups on how to pull the engine or buy some lottery tickets. There is really nothing you can do other than fix it at this point. You could always pull the valve cover and take a peek to see what you are dealing with.

Short answer is no. The chains aren't the problem. It's all the other related timing component pieces (guides, tensioners and cassettes) that allow the chains to rattle. If your chains are rattling, death is imminent w/out component replacement, which unfortunately requires engine removal.

pre-lube

There is a pre-lube mod available. The info for the mod can be found on this forum. The purpose of the mod isn't primarily to oil the chains, but to provide oil pressure to the cam chain tensioners, preventing the chains from flailing at start up. Unfortunately, this mod will only be beneficial on your rebuild or next engine.

koda2000, weren't you working on a pre-oiler system a couple months back?

Yes, but haven't gotten back to that again. Too many other things on my plate. I thought about responding with a suggestion about pre-oiling, but that would only be helpful with noise at startup, not while driving. If you've got chain rattle while driving the damage is already done. The OP's most likely already has broken cassettes/guides and pieces of plastic in his oil pan.

I agree, it is preventative, and the damage is probably already done on the OP's engine.
