Ok,Need alittle help please,I have a 02 Explorer with the 4.0.It started running rough like it had bad plug wires after some messing around i found the pcv valve out and oil all down the valve cover. But atlas now doesnt run to speak of.When it starts its different everytime: sometimes 1/4 throttle, sometimes full throttle while cranking.when it starts has no power, climbs rpms slow and smokes after a couple minutes. After running pull plugs all have oil on them and threads.Kinda "backfires"? once in a while ,once puking oil all over the pass fender out the throttlebody (air cleaner off).I cant get the pvc in right doesnt appear to have threads on valve cover.Any ideas what the heck is going on and how i can fix this?Someone told me timing chain, but im wondering if its pvc related and oil,oil hasnt been changed in a couple years.Any help would be great dont really have the means to replace the motor if its cooked. Thanks for any help -Andrew

If you have oil on all your spark plugs after pulling them out of the cylinder head, you could have bad piston rings and oil is slipping by the rings fouling out the plugs. It is unlikely you have bad piston rings on every cylinder and since you mentioned a PCV valve issue and oil in your throttle body intake, it sounds to me that this is the source of the oil getting on to every spark plug. Oil is traveling from the valve cover/ PCV valve tube into the air intake, then traveling up and into the throttle body air intake, down into the combustion chamber and mixing with the air and fuel mixture, thus fouling out the plugs from firing correctly in that manner. I would say your PCV valve failed and oil is blowing by or thru it. The oil at the throttle body intake suggests this as far as I'm concerned, but I'm no mechanic. I would at least change the PCV valve first, then change all the spark plugs, cleanout the oil in the air intake and throttle body, probably wouldn't hurt cleaning the Mass Air Flow sensor also. You can check your PCV valve by removing it from the valve cover and starting the engine, and place your finger tip over the end of it that goes into the valve cover, and if you feel suction on your finger tip, the PCV valve is working correctly. If no suction is felt, the valve is no good. That is what I know about testing a PCV valve. Maybe someone else in here can give you better info. Also, not changing the oil and filter in a "couple of years" is "nuts"! Change your oil and filter every 3-4 months depending on the miles you drive in that time period. 3,000 miles is the standard mileage between oil changes. This is most likely the source of your problems. The oil is probably like mud. Your engine crankcase probably needs a cleaning out as well, I know a lot of people in here recommend using the SEAFOAM treatment. It comes in a can you can buy at almost any parts store or places like Walmart.

Whoa....please change that oil.....even old oil with no miles on it breaks down. Reminds me of a time at work when i had to poke a screwdriver into an oilpan drain just to get some liquid to come out. Clean that system hard.....probably atf at this point. Pull the pcv and give it a shake....no rattle means dirty valve. And that elbow has a bad habit of collapsing so its probably a good idea to change that. There is a thread on that somewhere around here.
