02 and 04 exploer motors interchangeable

I have a wrecked 02 explorer with an excellent motor I also have an 04 explorer the motor shot today when I bought the 04 the transmission was bad thought the 02 transmission would interchange was told different so we rebuilt the 04 trans the motors are 4.0 and look identical they r both 4 wheel drive I'm wanting to get the 02 motor put into the 04 will it interchange with the transmission and work correctly I have been told motors are the same but the trannys are different bolt patterns I'm not sure looking for someone who does know?? Thanks in advance!

The V6s and V8s use different bolt patterns.

The engines should interchange fine, but there may be different sensors, or the sensors could be in different locations between the two engines. Many people will swap the intake manifold which holds most of the sensors if there is an issue.
