I have a 2000 with simular problem but only does this when it is snowy roads snowing or sometimes raining I was thinking the same as you but if you hear anything before I do could you let me know?

Thanks Frikki3241

When it is wet or snowy out this will happen, assuming your explorer has the auto 4WD, as soon as it senses the tire slipping it will engage the 4WD to keep you from slipping, as soon as it senses no slipping it will un-engage. If this happens when it is dry you have a problem. I have had it happen a few times (when dry) when I am parking, maybe if there is loose gravel or something.

it does it on dry pavement it locks then unlocks like every second

The 3rd Gen "atuo" 4WD is a seamless system, in other words you should not know when it is kicking in and out. Also, our system kicks in and out quite often, but normally you do not notice it. What does the noise sound like? What if you manually put it in 4WD, does the noise stop?

it not so much a sound but you can feel it kick in and out .if i stick it in 4x4 the tcase stays locked in .the only noise it makes is a little whine from the tcase thats normal when put in 4x4

i just strolled though some over post and discovered that it probably is the 4x4 module im going to unplug the wire harness on tcase and see if still does it .

My 2002 4x4 must be broken, because it BANGS when it engages :)

i unplugged the harness and it drove great no noise , no shutter going to get a new module and replace

I realise this happens in auto 4wd but it also happens when it is in 4wd and it shouldn't I have had this happen a couple of times on dry pavement as i was driving also
