My brother's '02 Crown Vic has been having power issues lately. Today he was driving and everything shut off inside, and finally the motor a few seconds later. He had a loose terminal that wouldn't tighten, so I replaced both terminals. This didn't fix the problem. I pulled the alternator and, sure enough, it was bad. We replaced it with a remanufactured unit. Now the car is running fine and the battery is staying charged, but we noticed a rotten egg/sulfur-like smell. I know this is common when the cats are going or gone. Can anything else cause this? I heard somewhere that they lowered restrictions on gas so it now contains more sulfur?
What I think happened is that when he was driving with the bad alternator, one or both of the O2s started losing voltage and were sending wrong signals, forcing the vehicle to run rich. Sound feasible? Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks!
