New here and this forum has helped me with trying to get my parents explorer running and I say thx. I have to replace my intake manifold on parents explorer. I have been to a few junk yards that told me they have one and when I go the manifold is totaly different then what my parents have on their explorer.

I went to fordparts.com to see if could find the correct manifold. I put my vin# in and I found the intake manifold but the pic looks totaly different again. On the same website I searched under 04 and 05 and the pic looks like what my parents have on their explorer, so I am a bit confused. Hope someone can help. Here is some info my parents explorer

I don't know that I can answer your question since my 2002 Explorer has the 4.6 engine. I recently had to replace the intake manifold on my vehicle and found the correct Dorman replacement part in stock at O'reillys Auto Parts with lifetime guarantee for $239 -- and it seems that Amazon.com carries the same part for $150. You might try them.

PS -- I don't know that I'd go to a wrecking yard for this part, but the 4.0 eng might be different. The 4.6 factory engine has a plastic manifold with a plastic thermostat housing. The proper replacement part for the 4.6 has a crossover thermostat housing that is aluminum which is much better and it is bolted onto the plastic manifold.

Thanks for the reply fordysenior. Unfortunitly the 4.6L and 4.0L are different.
The intake manifold on the 4.0 is plastic also. Why they would make these out of plastic is beyond me, only thing I can think of is to save weight.
I went to the dealer yesterday and finally found a part# here is the part #1L2Z-9424-CA , the part number on mine was 2L2E-9K479-AB not sure why the #'s are different.
I found one finally that was the same at a salvage yard. I just can't see myself paying $230-330 for a piece of plastic. I got it for $100, it was tough for me to pay that. I looked it over real well before I purchased it and didn't see anything wrong with it.

For things that leak why would you get parts from a junk yard, what if it does leak again since it doesn't get newer over time ?
A new one cost around $150+ (or cheaper online or in amazon/rockauto)

Ford shifted their engineering to their accounting department over the years, that's why we have cost cutting in parts manufacturing and selection.

The dealer is also not also the first place to look/buy into unless it's a dealer-item only.
