I'm sure the answers are around in this forum, and I've been digging thru all the posts but maybe this will help me quicker.
I've got a 2002 explorer and it just quit moving. I'm being told so any different things so I figured I'd put it all out there and see what everyone thinks.
I was driving 65 mph on the highway and my explorer started slowing down. The rpms went up while the speedo went down. O pulled over and shut it off and sat for a while. After I fired it back up she moved again. But not for long. Same thing. Rpms up, speedo down. I had it towed to the dealership where they checked the fluid and said it was fine. It has never pulled on its own again. The od light had been flashing in the past but nothing major like hard shifting or anything like that. As soon as it started flashing I called the dealership to get it in but they said they were a few weeks backed up. Anyways. I had it towed from the dealership to the house. The truck rolled up the rollback forwards just fine. It would not roll backwards off even in neutral. The rear wheels spin in opposite directions when being pulled backwards, but both roll forward if pushed forward. I've been told everything from need a new transmission, bands, rear end, shift solonoids, transfer case, everything. No one can tell me what exactly I need. I don't wanna drop more than I need to into this thing but I do want it back running. Any ideas of why it's doing this?

did the check engine light come on? When the OD light flashes its an indication something is wrong with the transmission and will throw codes. I wonder if the dealership checked for codes or past codes. there should be some. strange they said nothing is wrong with it.

unless they already knew and knew you dont have $3500 to fix it.

either way, best thing to do is see if you can pull some codes, but you need a dealership or one that can read factory transmission codes.

ive been doing research on the 5r55 transmissions we have and I can say there are a few issues that would indicate the problems your having. all I am assuming call for pulling the trans except for a couple of items.

easiest DIY thing you can do other than reading codes is to pull the drain pan on the trans and see if there is anything in the pan like metal shards, pieces of plastic, seals etc.,., there is also a magnetic drain on the inside that you can check for metal shavings.

then you can have an idea of what it will take/cost to fix it.

Two code came up in the past, I can't recall them at the moment, but the dealership cleared them and since it won't drive now they don't come back up. Even the od light quit coming on. Just the abs light now and that may be because its been sitting a while?

the wheels rolling forward but not backward means the one way clutch in your trans is stuck engaged.
