I have an 02 explorer xls with 114k miles on it, the "O/D Off" light starts flashing sometimes out of nowhere. I understand that this is a common problem with the explorers, it also shifts hard sometimes and when going down the highway the RPM's will jump around a good bit, at 70mph my RPM's normally run around 2000 but they will jump up to 3-3300rpms. This happens both when the light is flashing and when it is not flashing.

Do I need to rebuild the entire transmission or is there an easier solution to my problem?

Thanks for the help

Haphazardly guessing about sources of slippage or incorrecty engine speeds with these transmissions is akin to peeing into the wind.

You need to check for Trouble Codes. The flashing O/D OFF light is done in response to the computer detecting an incorrect shaft speed internally, or an inappropriate match between speeds of adjacent rotating parts.

My guess is that your eng. rpms reflect a Torque Converter Clutch which is not properly locking up, though it could also be slippage elsewhere. If the problem is intermittent, it becomes more likely the TCC is the culprit, since slipping clutches elsewhere, or bands, rarely "come & go".

Just my 2 cents worth. The code(s) would help greatly. Many parts stores will read them for you free of charge. imp

My 02' was having a lot of slippage issues, OD light flashing off and on, etc. Ended up cosing m3 2900 to have it rebuilt with 75K warranty, they had to replace everything minus the case. The tranny runs better now that it did when it was new.
