I have an 02 Explorer V8 4x4 with 76,000 miles. (Warranty is gone at 84,000:rolleyes: ) I first noticed this sound about 2 weeks ago. You hear it coming from underneath the car towards the front. I lifted the hood to see if i heard it anylouder but it was actually muted. When the car is sitting and iddling you hear this grinding sound intermitently. It goes away for about 40 seconds then comes back. You also hear the sound when driving. It was in at firestone getting an oil change about 2 months ago and they said it was time for a new fan belt, because mine was cracking and was worn. Could that be source of the noise.

Then another weird thing is when im accelerating about 70%-100% throttle. Say im going from about 0-60mph. Once it gets to the top of the rpm band at between 4-7 rpm it will start to tick. The car is accelerating about as quick as it should be but i can just feel it, and hear it hesitating. Have any of you experienced what im talking about.

Anyway here is the link to the sound clip
