I've been reading the prior posts thinking someone would have already encountered this problem but I'm still at a loss. I have an 02 XLS that I've had for 8 years. I has never failed me and was quite surprised yesterday when it finally let me down. The day prior I drove it 700 miles and it showed no signs of an impending problem. I woke the next morning, and while the temp was crisp about 45 it wasn't what I would call cold. I put the key in and it fired but shortly stalled. As I turned the key again it gave one cough then just cranked. I replaced the plugs and wires since I have 150k and they were original equipment. I checked the fuel rail and it has pressure though I don't have know the PSI. I can here the pump working and it seems OK. I checked and I'm getting a good spark. The code reader says I have low EGR but its said that for 5 years. I checked the fuses and they seem fine. Is there a relay that would prevent the injectors from working? Could it be a faulty sensor that wouldn't give an error? If so wouldn't it at least start in a limp mode. In my heart and can just feel that its something simple but I just can't place my finger on it. Thanks for any help or comments. Bob

v6 0r v8?,

autozone rent the fuel pressure guage, if you have fuel and spark, I would unplug the mass are flow sensor and try to stat, if no change plug back in, and dissconect the idle air control sensor.

if no change take out some plugs on each side see if you have compression, that the timing chains did not break.

Thanks for the suggestions. I suspected it was something simple but I just couldn't put my finger on it. I ponied up $100 to get the car towed to the dealer thinking it would be a no brainer for them. It stumped them for half a day then they called me with the idea of bad gas. I had stopped at 3 gas stations the previous day and put a 120 miles on since the last. But the engine never cooled so in the morning the gas with the old plugs just couldn't get her started. The stealership charged me 500 the drain the gas and 750 the drop the tank. Sometimes you just have to pay someone to think outside the box for you. thanks

You could have also encountered what mine had/has an issue with and that's the inertia switch located at the passenger side kick panel, make sure the little button is pressed, my will unseat the inertia ball thing and i'll have to press it down.

So it WAS bad gas? Or did they find something else?

Just bad gas. The sprayed starting fluid and it fire up so they assumed bad gas. I should also mention that I had 150k on the original wires and plugs which probsbly didn't help my situation.
