2002 Mountaineer
Ok guys so I'm driving my 02 4.6 Mountaineer on the highway the other day and I stopped to pay the toll, took off from the booth and my coolant blew out from what appears to be the rear of the motor near the firewall or on the bottom of the motor. Coolant sprayed all over the top of the motor and all over the exhaust. I replaced the intake manifold and radiator about a year ago as I know this isn't the cause. I'm hoping I didn't Crack the block. Truck runs with no oil mixed in with the antifreeze and no antifreeze in with the oil. Any ideas on what happened? :us:

There's a hose coming out of the top front area. It goes up, then angles down toward the passenger side (probably headed to the heater core.) It should have a plastic check valve (about the size of a flasher) in it. These crack and leak like a sieve. Only see it when it's full and probably under pressure.

It'll leak on the intake, fill the plug tubes (causing a misfire) and roll off the back of the engine.
It's how I picked up an '03 Mounty with blown head gaskets for $400.

It's $18 at Ford. Hopefully it's what your problem is.

Also, check your manifold you replaced. The replacement manifold I installed was a Dorman brand, the one I got from them had a rubber plug with a spring type clamp on the rear passenger side of the manifold. Under hard acceleration, that clamp did not hold and the rubber plug came off and coolant went everywhere.

If you used a Dorman intake, this is most likely your problem.

I'm going to check this tomorrow as it is now sitting 50 miles from my house. The cover had coolant all over the top of it but the insulated part under it touching the motor was bone dry. This also did happen under some heavy acceleration.

It was that plug on the intake. I replaced it with a cap and a radiator clamp. Thanks a lot guys
