02 Sport trac with code po457 and new gas cap.

2002 Sport Trac with 100,000 miles. Story is this.........Check fuel cap light comes on last week sometime. So I do what the light says, and check the fuel cap. Everything looks good so I clean up everything I can see and put a small coat of grease on the seal of the gas cap. I reinstall the gas cap and go on my way. The light stays on for 15-20 minutes and then goes off by itself. Stays that way for a week--Then it comes back on. This time I go and buy a new cap and install the cap. Drive like this for a week and the light stays put this time. I get my codes checked at advance AP and it gives me PO457(Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected(Fuel Cap loose/Off))

I've searched and I can only find one thread dealing with a po457 code. Any Ideas?

your computer will store codes even if the problem is fixed. Just have the codes cleared and you will be good. You can leave them also they will not hurt anything.

Ok. I had them cleared(I purchased a really cheap code reader for basic reading) I'll report if I see anything different!

One week gone by after resetting code,and no codes. For once, it might have been as simple as replacing your gas cap!
