I have an 02 Sport Trac with the 4.0 sohc engine. Long story but it needs a motor and has 206k miles on it. My question is I can't seem to determine if it is a balance shaft engine or not. It is a 2 wheel drive and I think that only the 4 wheel drives have the balance shaft. Can anybody assist me with that determination?

Factory preference with option

I suspect that the preferred configuration is balance shaft engines on 4WD vehicles and no balance shaft engines on rear wheel drive vehicles. However, apparently the factory had the option of installing a no balance shaft engine on rear wheel drive vehicles when balance shaft engines were not available on the assembly line. The Ford 2005 Mustang SOHC V6 engine assembly instructions includes installation of the balance shaft and associated components. The engine part number should identify which engine you have. Unfortunately, I don't know where it is stamped on the engine block.

Determined I have a no balance chaft engine by checking with ford. I have checked around for prices of rebuilt engines and found that most I am fining are around $2500 or so. Does anybody know of anywhere reasonable to locate a quality rebuilt engine with a solid warranty? Was trying to drop it in myself for under $2500 and thats with new mounts and waterpump and thermostat. Mainly cause the wife is not warting to give me more than what I need to fix it. However I believe in do it right the first time.
