'02 XLT, 4x4 auto-hi-lo button failure.

I just bought an 02 XLT 4x4. The 4x4 range selector buttons (4auto-4hi-4lo) don't do anything when I push them. The 4low light on the instument panel lights up briefly when i turn the car on...the 4high light in the instrument panel never lights up. I checked all the fuses, and I verified that the 4 wheel drive system never engages.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix or diagnose this problem???

Bad switches or connection in the wiring would be my guess.

Try to switch it to 4X4 high in neutral gear at a complete stop.

Possible GEM problem. I know of someone who had to have theirs replaced. Theirs did the same thing but got stuck in HI.

To get into 4Lo, you need to be stopped, in neutral with your foot on the brake when you engage. You should hear a click and feel a slight clunk. You will only hear a click when you switch to 4hi.
