Hey Guys,

Recently I went from 3.55 gears to 4.56 also with 33" tires. After the regear my speedometer is 20 mph off of my actual speed. I looked and looked and couldn't find a speedometer gear on my 5R55W transmission. Am I overlooking it? Most vehicles have a gear with different teeth for your gear ratio. I know the older explorers have these, but is it the same for the 02-05? If anyone knows where the gear location is or if I am completely wrong please let me know thank you all!

Michael

There isn't one exactly. In the rear diff (or in the rear hubs if you have advancetrac) there are the ABS sensors. The ECU uses the inputs from these sensors to get the speedometer reading.

In order to correct the speedometer you will need to use a programmer like the XCal to adjust the revolutions per mile reported by the sensors. The programmer will also allow you to set the gear ratio that the ECU factors in...this should also get the transmission shift pattern right again.

Darn, always turns out harder than I thought ha. Thanks James. How much would Ford charge to do this with their machines? Any idea?

Thanks again

I don't even know if a dealership would do it. A programmer is a better deal really since you can also change shift points, read DTC codes, and install custom tunes to give you a little extra hp and torque. Henson Performance is an explorerforum vendor and will sell you a one plus whatever custom tunes you might want (if any) for a reasonable price. Give them a call and tell them you're an explorerforum member; I was very happy with what they did for me.

I have an SCT flash tuner will that do the same thing?

It should, yeah. You would need to hook it up, go into the tuning menu, and look at what options are available. This flash tuner you have is set up for your Explorer right?

It's the SCT SF3 power flash tuner. I bought it to get custom tunes and never got around to it. I really have no clue for the settings for the preprogrammed tunes so I didn't mess with it. I'll look to see if there's a tune for speedometer. Thanks James

Just use the stock tune and adjust the settings from there. Should be a quick rundown on how to do it in the instructions.
