when driving my explorer, i get a sound that sounds like your dragging a chain behind your vehicle...... i also have the normal "HUM" from a wearing rear differential (just changed out the fluid in it and nothing was burnt) but the noise that my wife says is coming from the center of the vehicle is the transfer case im assuming, i want to replace the fluid in the transfer case and see if it quiets down alittle.

im not sure if it uses ATF mercon III or if it uses a gear oil.

any help would be appreciated.

and if you know, what kinda fluid does the front diff use? i put mobile one 75w90 in the rear (i believe it was 75w90) but i cant really remember what it was i used, at 125k miles it looked like the original oil coming out of it, but it didnt have any metal particles that were visible in it.

The transfer cases uses DEXRON/mercon and the rear diff uses 75w140 Synthetic, it's recommended that you use FORD XL-3 friction modifier everytime you service these components.
