is it the cammer motor? If so it could be the tensioners and all the related crap for the OHC,s. Just got done with mine.

:salute:yes 4.0 sohc 6 i thought timing chain issues were fixed on these engines. what did it cost to do repair ,did they repair rear chain i just found the problem , inside crank shaft pulley there is something rattling around ,what i dont know yet but haPPy its not timing chain, thanx for responding

same here, there is a loose nut moving inside the crankshaft pulley. I put my finger in the front and feels it moving around. that is causing a rattling noise. will post back when I get to it.

Mercury mountaineer harmonic balancer, any suggestion on holding for installation?

Ok here goes, the harmonic balancer/damper/crankshaft pullet had to be removed. I removed the fan clutch, and fan shroud for more working space. I used a bolt puller and removed the balancer. this was very easy,,, I used a ratchet and braced it on the engine frame on the side where the engine/fan turns and turned the key in the ignition. split the nut was loose. took the part off and now installing the replacement. will post pics of the job when am done.. i have a slight problem however bracing the balancer for final installation. any suggestions? today is 11/20/11 am wirking on it right now
