Have a 04 explorer 4.0 that’s been sitting for a while due to a leaking trans which is gonna get fixed eventually.
I went to fire it up after sitting for about a month. Dead battery so I went to give it a jump and it behaved like I had crossed the wires arcing at the battery and whatnot so I immediately removed the jumper cables.
Was 110% sure I had right terminals correct and boom did it again but this time saw some arcing from the alternator main connector.
Again disconnect right away and just for kicks I removed the main power wire going to the alternator. I noticed that the main lug on the alt is OHMing out on the outer case. I thought that was kind of odd and was wondering if it shorted internally? I’ve never seen or heard of that before but I suppose anything is possible on a 20 year-old vehicle.
But once the main lug was disconnected I was able to jump and drive the Explorer on the battery only driving normal.
So my question is, should I not be able to ohm out the main log in the case on an alternator? And also on that main power wire going to that, should I not be able to ohm that to the battery ground?
Just trying to rule out a big short on the block somewhere that I can’t see versus a bad alternator.
Thanks all
