At 77k I began to experience the 2-3 shift problem. Had no idea this is a typical problem or what the solution might be. I did know I wanted to fix it myself if possible (I am a typical shade-tree mechanic).
I was able to fix it for about $300 thanks to this forum!
Researching the problem here and understanding what the most likely suspect was, combined with a reference to "Central Valve Bodies" I called "Donny" there and ordered a rebuilt valve body. Donny was pleasant and helpful. When I mentioned this forum he even knocked 25 bucks off the purchase price. Doing business with them could not have been easier. The valve body arrived wrapped in plastic, inside a sealed plastic envelope, inside a zip lock bag, inside a box, inside another box! They provide a return shipping label (Fed-Ex) for the core so the return shipping costs are part of the total cost to me ($250). Also, they don't fool around with a core charge. Nice to do business with folks that know how to do business.
Armed with my on-line shop manual from ALLDATA I put my laptop by the vehicle and after 5 hours of effort was back on the road. Shifts perfect now. The shop manual was really useful, particularly when I was installing the new unit. I did not notice that there are 3 different length bolts used to secure the VB until I began the install of the new unit. The manual denotes the length of bolt for each hole. Whew.
Just have to say, other than routine maintenance, in 6 years and 77k miles my total maintenance costs for this vehicle come to a grand total of $400. The only other problem I have had was a failed fuel temp/press sensor.
