My mom has my Explorer at the moment, but she's been having some trouble with it and I'm hoping you guys can give me an idea of what might be wrong.

We live on a level driveway, but leave our driveway onto a fairly steep hill (going up the hill to go on our way). In the morning (first start since the previous night), if it's driven out forward and up the hill there are no problems. However, if it's backed out, it won't go from reverse to drive. It continues to roll back. It's happened a few times so far, my mom will stop it, park it, and then wait a few minutes. When she tries to put it into drive again, it works fine for the rest of the day.

After this happening a few times, she decided to test something. On another morning, she drove it forward down the hill we're on, put it in reverse, and drove it backwards back into our driveway. It worked fine. Then she tried to shift it into drive again - no dice. It wouldn't shift, almost like it was in neutral (it stayed where it was since she was on a level surface now).

In mid-January the transmission was rebuilt after the torque converter broke. Could something have been done wrong there?

Thanks for any help you can give,
Rob
