04 Ex no start need help

My wife was driving my 04 4.0 SOHC when she said there was a pop and then it quit running. We towed it home,it turns over but it sounds funny, like there is no compression, no codes in scanner, valve train is moving on both sides (removed oil cap on passenger side and a sensor on driver side),pulled one plug and did rag test, it has compression, pulled air box and the air filter smells like exhaust. Now this is were I am confused, I got a compression tester and the first thing I did was to pull all three plugs on driver side, threaded in the tester and rolled the motor over. IT STARTED!!! Scared the crap out of me, so it runs on just the three cylinders on the passenger side. I put driver side plugs back in and it wont run. please help me!

Replace all of your plugs, and make sure that you have the firing order correct when you put the wires back on.

The first thing that came to mind when you mentioned the "pop" is that it blew a plug out of the cylinder, or that you had a misfire.

There should be absolutely no way that the engine will run when you have 3 plugs out of it...do you have a check engine light on?

Start with fresh plugs (gap them correctly), check your firing order.

are 4.0's known to spit out plugs? I didnt think so.

all the plugs were in tight and there are no codes, checked that with my scanner. This truck only has 74,x.. so the plug are original and I had not touched them until this happened

Well it was a rough couple of days! After the explorer broke down the starter went out in my pick up, then my weed wacker died! But that is a different subject, I called a friend at a Ford Dealer and he said they had never seen one run on three cylinders, but he would check with some of the techs. After he asked they said they had never tried that and I got the impression the were not going to. The EX is at the shop now and when I find out I will let everyone know what was wrong

theyre not known to spit out plugs, ours doesnt anyway and ive never heard of this anyway

it has only been a month and a half but we have an answer! rear timing chain is junk and the crank is damaged at the key way. I am not going to even try to save this motor so I need to know what years I can get a motor from. I need a SOHC 4.0 thanks for any help

any sohc will work, the only thing is 4x4 or 4x2.

I was told that 04 was the only year I could use but I did not believe the guy at the salvage yard. Doesn't matter though because I found one about an hour and a half away, they were going to pull it Friday and I will pick it up on Tuesday, hope to be driving it on Thursday!

Bosch no good, could explain all those 5R55S solenoid problems; the dang things are made by Bosch! imp
