2005 Ford Explorer XLT
Just recently purchased a 2005 Ford Explorer XLT at a great price but the 4 wheel drive won't engage. 4 high and 4 low lights both come on in the instrument cluster and the switch but nothing happens. Who I got it from said it was working fine before he left for a three week vacation but when he returned it wouldn't engage. Haven't seen any fluid leaks or anything. Have been told that it might be the shift motor need replaced. Any ideas?

Welcome aboard!! :salute:

Could be a bunch of things. Do a search and you will find a bunch of threads pertaining to the 4x4 not working.

When mine wasn't working I replaced the 4x4 Control Module with no luck. It turned out to be a bad ground on the transfer case.

Like I said there a a bunch of threads.

Good luck getting it sorted.

I have seen there are many others but are for older models. Have read that the 04 and 05 have a slightly different setup that the older ones.

I was just wanting to get some ideas on what I could try to get the problem sorted out. It is a great truck that would be even better if the 4wd worked in it.
