05 Ranger FX4 Shifter Knob Removal

Hey guys,

I was trying to unscrew my shifter knob from my 05 FX4 Ranger and I've been having a lot of trouble. I was told from the Ford dealership that it does unscrew and doesn't just pull off. I don't know if heating it up will do anything??

If someone knows anything more then I do about this I would appreciate the advice!

If you have the chrome shift lever, there is a locknut under the "8-ball" shift knob. After loosening the locknut with a 16mm wrench, you can unscrew the ball.

If you have the black lever with the vinyl knob, it is glued onto the splines formed in the lever. It can be pulled straight up and off with a lot of effort. Or wait a few years and it may come off by itself on a hot day going into second....

I tried the heat gun and giving it all I had to pull it off and it was a no show. I got the repair manual and it doesn't sound like a whole lot of work to take the shifter lever right out and have a go at it. Might have better luck not cramped up worrying about cracking something off down near the transmission.
