06 ranger shift knob removal

I have a 2006 ranger sport and I'm trying to remove the knob from the gear shift. I'm told it just screws off but the thing won't budge. Anyone know what I should do?

Not sure about 06 but most late model Rangers have the knob glued onto a spline formed in the top of the tubular shifter arm. The knob will come off if you pull up on it hard enough or tap under it with a hammer and a wood block or two. Just don't give yourself a bloody nose when it lets go...
