Anyone,

Sorry if this is the wrong thread or if this issue is posted elsewhere (for what it is worth I did do a search and could not find anything).

I have 76,000 miles on my Sport Trac XLT (bought it brand new) and today the car was going in and out of overdrive without any driver input; the trip mileage display was flashing the mileage and then "O/D". As this was happening the car was definitley shifting gears as the display changed.

Anyone know what this could be an indication of? Is my transmission going or just an electrical issue?

So mad since I just got 4 brand new tires and front/rear brakes. Don't want to give up this car now!

did you do a search on "flashing o/d"? i think there are quite a few threads on this issue.

I did not, thanks...only for "overdrive".

Sorry about that, mods.

It usually means that your tranny is on borrowed time.

So if this is the case, what would be recommended? After reading about this issue, it seems that either a rebuilt or new transmission is anywhere from $2500-4000.

As stated earlier, 4 new tires and new front/rear brakes within the last month makes this issue even more annoying for me.

Thanks for any opinions.

Rebuilding the transmission.

This is true.

Late-model Ford automatics are notoriously fussy about having the fluid flushed, every 30,000 miles in most applications. If you do not do that then the tranny is very likely to expire before it hits 100k. Some of them will crap out anyway but changing the tranny fluid is very critical and most people never think to do it.

If you are able to leave it for a while, see if there is a trade or vo-tech school in your area that will work on it. My daughter's boyfriend is attending such a school and told me they will do repairs for the cost of the parts only.

My tranny went out about a year and a half ago and i had it completely rebuilt for only $1800
Maybe i just got lucky but $2500 for a rebuild on that transmission seems pretty steep.

Thank you very much for the response and info. What is even more frustrating for me at this point is that I follow the Ford maintenance schedule to the T. I realize that things fail and break, but what a pain this is.

Thanks for this info! How has your tranny been since the rebuild? Did you take it to a dealership? Local guy?

Of course, I may be jumping the gun as I have not brought the vehicle to anyone to read code(s)...doing that today.

I had a local guy do it. One of the best in my area actually. It came with a list of everything he did and a two year warranty. So far its worked great.

I'll never take my truck to the dealership for repairs though, especially not one this big. That might be where you'll find the $2500 - $4500 price tag.
