'06 4.6 Bucking and Kicking :(

Being the old style 2 piece plug you'd want the mechanic to do them and ask for the old plugs so you can see what they look like and confirm they actually replaced them all. LOL I bet they'll have a ***** getting them out after a decade and likely never change due to low millage and modest acceleration.

Totally agreed. I want nothing to do with changing those plugs.

Every Ford mechanic has their own method for removing the plugs. I use a 3/8 impact and haven't broken one in the last 100 I have done. Make sure whoever does them knows what they are dealing with. At the same time don't pay more than $400 for Motorcraft plugs installed from any shop. I'd also ask for the old ones back.

Heard back from the dealership. All 8 plugs replaced  I also complained about a small leak in the rear struts, and both of those got replaced. Now they are just dealing with a shake at highway speed that came on a couple days ago. Should be good as new in an hour or so. I will report back with how everything feels when I get it back.

Well.....

Pick it up from the dealership, and seems to be running well, which it usually did prior to coming up to operating temp. Drive it on the highway, and once it warms up, I start noticing the misfire again, but more slight.... for a few minutes. Come to a stop off an exit ramp, and noticing a little bit of a shake at idle, but smooths right out... Drive back to work, misfire becomes a little more pronounced... Come to a stop at another exit, and now the shaking is much more noticeable. Proceed to head back to the dealership, and now it feels like a constant misfire, barely driveable. I limp it back to the dealer, and notice that on the way it did flash the CEL, but it went off after I let off the throttle and coasted for a few seconds. They scan for codes, and nothing... They did replace the plugs with SP514's, so at least there is that. Im guessing a coil isnt properly seated/plugged in/or went bad. The saga continues.

They appear to take it out for a good drive as you did. Rarely do they go far or long. But unless they do. Its hard for them to experience the problems.

Agreed. In the meantime, I am driving a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica loaner.... I would rather have my 06 XLT

I have a happy ending to this tale. The dealership was able to identify a bad coil pack, which they moved around a few times, and the misfire followed. The 06 is running wonderfully now, and has quite a bit more power. Put around 500 miles on her this weekend, and all is well.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread!

So... Back to the dealership for another misfire that started this morning. Put around 700 miles on it without a misfire, and I have to say, I love the 4.6 3v when it is running right. At least the dealership is paying for my 2017 Explorer Limited rental :)

First of all, again the coil was the culprit.

Whenever I start getting the misfires, I just go ahead and get all 8 changed. I know it may not be most economical way, but once one of them is going, others are behind.

Makes total sense. If they don't replace the 7 original coil packs, I will be replacing them.
